Michael A. Caligiuri
Michael A. Caligiuri is an American physician scientist focused on oncology and immunology. He is currently the president of the City of Hope National Medical Center and the Deana and Steve Campbell Physician-in-Chief Distinguished Chair. He was elected president of the American Association for Cancer Research, the world's largest cancer research organization, for 2017–2018. He was previously the CEO of the James Cancer Hospital (2008-2017), Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (2003-2017), and Director of the Division of Hematology-Oncology (2000-2008) at the Ohio State University. He was elected to the United States National Academy of Medicine in 2018. Bone Marrow Transplantation
Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is the transplantation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, usually derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood in order to replicate inside of a patient and to produce additional normal blood cells. It may be autologous (the patient's own stem cells are used), allogeneic (the stem cells come from a donor) or syngeneic (from an identical twin). It is most often performed for patients with certain cancers of the blood or bone marrow, such as multiple myeloma or leukemia. In these cases, the recipient's immune system is usually destroyed with radiation or chemotherapy before the transplantation. Sydney Farber
Sidney Farber (September 30, 1903 – March 30, 1973) was an American pediatric pathologist. He is regarded as the father of modern chemotherapy for his work using folic acid antagonists to combat leukemia, which led to the development of other chemotherapeutic agents against other malignancies. Farber was also active in cancer research advocacy and fundraising, most notably through his establishment of the Jimmy Fund, a foundation dedicated to pediatric research in childhood cancers.
