Miami Conservatory
The Miami Conservatory is a school of ballet and classical dance, located in South Miami, Florida. Founded in 1949 by Thomas Armour, it is the oldest school of ballet in South Florida. The conservatory trains students of all ages, with more of an emphasis on young children. Many of the students of the conservatory go on to perform at the Miami City Ballet, a professional ballet company with a national and international reputation, founded in 1985 by Toby Lerner Ansin with founding artistic director, Edward Villella. South Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida in the Miami metropolitan area. The population was 11,657 at the 2010 census and as of 2019, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, was 11,911. Thomas Armour (ballet)
Thomas Makinson Armour (8 August 1890 – 20 January 1963) was a bishop in the Anglican Church of Australia. He was born on 8 August 1890 in New Springs, near Chorley, Lancashire. Education He was educated at Durham University as a member of St Chad's College and ordained in 1916. Career He served as an Army Chaplain and afterwards as Vicar of Orford, Cheshire. In 1928 he went to Australia as a member of the Brotherhood of the Good Shepherd at Dubbo. He was principal from 1929 until he became Dean of Newcastle in 1936. In 1943 he was appointed Bishop of Wangaratta, a position he held until his death in 1963. Family He married Flora Calder in 1944. Armour died in 1963, aged 72. He is buried in Wangaratta Cemetery. Toby Lerner Ansin
Toby Ansin (née Lerner; born January 3, 1941) is the former wife of the late Edmund Ansin, co-founder of Sunbeam Television In 1985, she founded Miami City Ballet, a dance company that altered the cultural landscape of the city of Miami and which subsequently acquired a national and international reputation. Ansin has continuously served on the Board of Trustees since its founding. Miami City Ballet is the largest South Florida arts organization reaching an annual audience of over 125,000 in four Florida counties. It includes a ballet school with over 1500 students and adults. Edward Villella
Edward Villella (born October 1, 1936) is an American ballet dancer and choreographer. He is frequently cited as America's most celebrated male dancer of ballet at the time. He has won numerous awards, including the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Special, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the National Medal of Arts. Education Villella enrolled in the School of American Ballet at age ten, and then the High School of Performing Arts, but then interrupted his dance studies to complete his college education. He attended the State University of New York Maritime College, New York Maritime Academy, where he lettered in baseball and was a championship boxing, boxer.
