Miami Beach Flamingos
The Miami Beach Flamingos were a professional minor league baseball team based in Miami Beach, Florida periodically from 1940 until 1954. The team played its home games at Flamingo Field and was a member of the Class D Florida East Coast League as the Miami Beach Tigers in 1940. The following season they changed their nickname to the Flamingos and won the league's championship. The FECL the then folded in May 1942 due to World War II. After the War, the Flamingos joined the new Class C Florida International League in 1946. The league became Class-B in 1949. The Flamingos played the 1952 season, sat-out 1953, and rejoined in 1954 only to move across Biscayne Bay and relocate to Miami as the Miami Beach Flamingos/Greater Miami Flamingos during the 1954 season. Florida International League
The Florida International League was a lower- to mid-level circuit in American and Cuban minor league baseball that existed from 1946 through July 27, 1954. It was designated Class C for its first three seasons, then upgraded to Class B in 1949 for the final 5½ years of its existence. History The FIL featured teams located in the largest metropolitan centers in Florida and Cuba. Its longest serving clubs were located in Miami (usually nicknamed the Sun Sox), Tampa (named the Smokers, after the city's large cigar business) and West Palm Beach (called the Indians, though the team was never affiliated with the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball). Michael Schemer (November 20, 1917 – April 22, 1983), nicknamed "Lefty", was an American professional baseball player whose eight-year (1940–1942; 1944–1948) career included 32 games played in Major League Baseball for the – New York Giants. Max Rosenfeld (December 23, 1902, in New York City – March 10, 1969, in Miami, Florida), was a professional baseball player who played outfield from 1931 to 1933 with the Brooklyn Robins/Dodgers. Biography Rosenfeld was Jewish. He has a great background as both a baseball player and manager. He started out in both football and baseball as a student at the University of Alabama. After college, he played for the St. Louis Browns of the American League as an outfielder. The Browns sent him to Birmingham, his home town team for two years, where he batted .302 and .344. He was later sold by the Browns to the Brooklyn Dodgers and he was farmed out to the Toledo Mud Hens of the American Association for two years, batting .352 and .330. Next he went to play for the Hartford Conn. Senators in the Eastern League. Whitey Platt
Mizell George "Whitey" Platt (August 21, 1920 – July 27, 1970) was a right-handed Major League Baseball outfielder who played from 1942 to 1943 for the Chicago Cubs, in 1946 for the Chicago White Sox and from 1948 to 1949 for the St. Louis Browns. Prior to playing professionally, Platt attended Palm Beach High School. In 1938, he joined the United States team under international baseball proponent Leslie Mann to compete in the inaugural Amateur World Series in England. He made his major league debut on September 16, 1942. He played in four games that season, collecting one hit in 16 at-bats for a .063 batting average. In 1943, he hit .171 in 41 at-bats, with three of his seven hits being doubles. He missed the 1944 and 1945 seasons while serving with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. John Stephen Phillips (May 24, 1919 – June 16, 1958) was an American professional baseball player. A right-handed pitcher, he appeared on the mound in one game in Major League Baseball in , working 4 innings in relief for the New York Giants and giving up five runs (all of them earned) on five hits and four bases on balls as the Giants were routed by the St. Louis Cardinals, 14–3. He also appeared in one other MLB game as a pinch runner on July 31 of that season against the Boston Braves, but failed to score a run. Phillips was a native of St. Louis whose pro career lasted for seven seasons (1942–48).
