Mexican Heritage Plaza
The Mexican Heritage Plaza - Centro Cultural de San José is a Chicano/ Mexican-American cultural center in San Jose, California, located in the Mayfair neighborhood of East San Jose. History Mexican Heritage Plaza opened in 1999. It is operated by the School of Arts and Culture. Facilities The plaza includes a 500-seat theater, gardens, classrooms, and meeting spaces. Art The ''Corazón y Espíritu de Mayfair'' mural was painted in 2004 by Precita Eyes Muralists. A series of mosaic tributes to Chicano and Mexican-American artists lines the north western entrance to the plaza. Tributes include guitarist Carlos Santana (Bay Area native), musical group Los Tigres del Norte (who began their recording career in San Jose), playwright Luis Valdez (who grew up in San Jose), and singer Linda Ronstadt (who serves as the honorary chair of the SJ Mexican Heritage Festival). Chicano
Chicano or Chicana is a chosen identity for many Mexican Americans in the United States. The label ''Chicano'' is sometimes used interchangeably with ''Mexican American'', although the terms have different meanings. While Mexican-American identity was related to encouraging Cultural assimilation, assimilation into White Americans, White American society and separating the community from the African Americans, African-American political struggle, Chicano identity emerged among anti-assimilationist youth. Mexican Americans ( es, mexicano-estadounidenses, , or ) are Americans of full or partial Mexican heritage. In 2019, Mexican Americans comprised 11.3% of the US population and 61.5% of all Hispanic and Latino Americans. Mayfair, San Jose
Mayfair is a neighborhood of San Jose, California, located in the Alum Rock district of East San Jose. It is one of San Jose's most historic Chicano/ Mexican-American districts and noted for being a center of the Chicano Movement and grassroots activists like Californian civil rights leader César Chávez. History Mayfair has been a working-class, Chicano/ Mexican-American neighborhood since its foundation in the early 1900s. Carlos Santana
Carlos Humberto Santana Barragán (; born July 20, 1947) is an American guitarist who rose to fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band Santana, which pioneered a fusion of Rock and roll and Latin American jazz. Los Tigres Del Norte
Los Tigres del Norte (English: ''The Tigers of the North'') are a norteño band from San Jose, California. Originally founded in Mocorito, Sinaloa, Mexico, with sales of 60 million albums, the band is one of the most recognized groups in the genre, due to its long history and its successes within the Mexican community in the diaspora. The band is famous for its political corridos, some of which have been censored, even in its own country. The band is the only Mexican group to win 6 Grammy awards and 12 Latin Grammys. In addition, the band has made 40 films alongside the Almada brothers (Mario and Fernando) among other well-known Mexican actors. Luis Valdez
Luis Miguel Valdez (born June 26, 1940) is an American playwright, screenwriter, film director and actor. Regarded as the father of Chicano film and theater, Valdez is best known for his play '' Zoot Suit'', his movie '' La Bamba'', and his creation of El Teatro Campesino. A pioneer in the Chicano Movement, Valdez broadened the scope of theatre and arts of the Chicano community.
