The Metropolitan School District of North Posey County, Indiana, commonly known as the MSD of North Posey, is the school corporation serving northern Posey County, Indiana. The school district covers six townships in northern Posey County which are Bethel, Center, Harmony, Robb, Robinson and Smith. The school district also includes the towns of Poseyville, New Harmony, Cynthiana and Griffin. Unincorporated communities in the district include Wadesville, Stewartsville, St. Wendel, Blairsville and Parker's Settlement. History Representatives from Robb School Township, Smith School Township and Center-Robinson Consolidated Schools first met in Poseyville on July 28, 1956, and agreed to reorganize their districts into a single metropolitan school district. Posey County is the southernmost, southwesternmost, and westernmost county in the U.S. state of Indiana. Its southern border is formed by the Ohio River, and its western border by the Wabash River, a tributary to the Ohio. As of 2010, the population was 25,910. The county seat is Mount Vernon. New Harmony, Indiana
New Harmony is a historic town on the Wabash River in Harmony Township, Posey County, Indiana. It lies north of Mount Vernon, the county seat, and is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The town's population was 789 at the 2010 census. Established by the Harmony Society in 1814 under the leadership of George Rapp, the town was originally known as Harmony (also called Harmonie, or New Harmony). In its early years the settlement was the home of Lutherans who had separated from the official church in the Duchy of Württemberg and immigrated to the United States. The Harmonists built a new town in the wilderness, but in 1824 they decided to sell their property and return to Pennsylvania. Robert Owen, a Welsh industrialist and social reformer, purchased the town in 1825 with the intention of creating a new utopian community and renamed it New Harmony. The South Gibson School Corporation is the largest of the three public school governing institutions in both enrollment and territory covered in Gibson County, Indiana as well as one of the ten largest in enrollment in Southwestern Indiana. Wadesville is an unincorporated community in northern Center Township, Posey County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It lies along State Road 66 northeast of the city of Mt. Vernon, the county seat of Posey County. Its elevation is 479 feet (146 m). Although Wadesville is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 47638. History Wadesville was laid out in 1852. The community was named for the Wade family of settlers. A post office has been in operation at Wadesville since 1855. Griffin, Indiana
Griffin is a town in Bethel Township, Posey County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 172 at the 2010 census. History Griffin was originally called Price's Station, and under the latter name was laid out in 1881 by William Price, and named for him. The present name honors Samuel Griffin, an early postmaster. A post office called Griffin has been in operation since 1881. The town was destroyed by the Tri-State Tornado on the afternoon of March 18, 1925, killing 44 people and injuring over 200. In 1972, a nearby outdoor rock concert Erie Canal Soda Pop Festival caused quite a stir in the town over the course of three days. Cynthiana is a town in Smith Township, Posey County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. Cynthiana is also home to internationally known companies, including Gore Galore, leading creator of haunted house props, and Band Shoppe, one of the world's largest manufacturers of marching band uniforms. History Cynthiana was named for Cynthiana, Kentucky, from whence on September 25, 1815, a group of 44 settlers had come.
