Metro Pictures Gallery
Metro Pictures was a New York City art gallery founded in 1980 by Janelle Reiring (previously of Leo Castelli Gallery), and Helene Winer (previously of Artists Space). It was located in SoHo until 1995 when it moved to Chelsea. The gallery closed in December of 2021. Artists Metro's opening group exhibition in 1980 included Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Troy Brauntuch, Jack Goldstein, Sherrie Levine, James Welling, and Richard Prince. During the early and mid-1980s, Mike Kelley, Louise Lawler, Martin Kippenberger, John Miller, Tony Oursler, Walter Robinson, and Jim Shaw joined the gallery. Newer generations of artists have continued to expand the gallery's offerings. These artists include Gary Simmons, Olaf Breuning, Andy Hope 1930, Andre Butzer, Sara VanDerBeek, Tris Vonna-Michell, Trevor Paglen, Camille Henrot, Sam Falls (since 2013), Judith Hopf (since 2017), and Gretchen Bender (since 2020). Camille Henrot
Camille Henrot (born 1978) is a French artist who lives and works in Paris and New York. Biography Henrot was born in 1978 in Paris, France. She attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs where she studied film animation and soon after helped assist ''Pierre Huyghe'' who worked in advertising and making music videos. She is based in New York City. Henrot’s work includes film, sculpture, drawing, painting and installation. Tris Vonna-Michell (born 1982) is a British artist who performs narratives and constructs installations through the layering of these narratives, photographs and mementos, presented using antiquated technologies and slide projection. Vonna-Michell lives in Southend in the United Kingdom and Stockholm, Sweden. Sara VanDerBeek
Sara VanDerBeek (born 1976), is an American artist who lives and works in New York City. She is known for photographing sculptures and three-dimensional still-life assemblages of her own making, some of which she destroys after the photos have been taken, as well as for exploring the depiction of women in art history particularly classical or ancient sculpture. Early life and education VanDerBeek grew up in Baltimore and studied visual arts at Baltimore School for the Arts during her high school years. Her father, Stan VanDerBeek, was an experimental filmmaker. She moved to New York in 1994 to attend her father's alma mater, Cooper Union. After graduating, she worked in commercial photography in London for three years. Gary Simmons (artist)
Gary Simmons (born April 14, 1964) is an American artist from New York City. Using icons and stereotypes of American popular culture, he creates works that address personal and collective experiences of Race (classification of human beings), race and class. He is best known for his "erasure drawings," in which he draws in white chalk on slate-painted panels or walls, then smudges them with his hands – a technique that renders their imagery ghostly. Work and exhibitions Early work Simmons received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1988. He received his MFA from CalArts in 1990 and received both the National Endowment for the Arts Interarts Grant and the Penny McCall Foundation Grant shortly after. Jim Shaw (artist)
Jim Shaw (born in 1952) is an American artist. His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Education Shaw received his B.F.A. from University of Michigan in 1974 and his M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts in 1978. Work Shaw invented O-ism, a pseudo-religion. In 2002, at the Swiss Institute in New York, he exhibited the fictitious studio and paintings of the imaginary O-ist painter "Adam O. Goodman" (or "Archie Gunn").
