Messenjah
Messenjah is a Canadian-based reggae group that flourished to become one of the most successful and popular reggae groups in the history of Canadian music. History Messenjah was formed in 1980 in Kitchener, Ontario and released their first album ''Rock You High'' independently in 1982. They were the first Canadian reggae band to be picked up by a major label; Warner Music Canada (also known as WEA). After 1985, the band began working out of Toronto. In 1988, the band was featured in the U.S. feature film ''Cocktail'' as well as on the film's soundtrack. They were also featured on the soundtrack of the Canadian produced movie ''Milk and Honey'' (1989). Messenjah had toured all over North America as well as in Jamaica for over sixteen years and in 1989 won the Juno Award for Best Reggae Recording. Ojiji
Rupert "Ojiji" Harvey (born Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, 9 February 1955) is a Reggae, Jazz, Funk, Dance Hall, and Roots music musician who is known for his solo records as well as his work in the Canadian band Messenjah, which had a platinum record with the hit "Cool Operator". Early life Born in Jamaica, Harvey moved to Canada with his family when he was eleven. In his teens, he helped form the R&B/funk band Crack of Dawn, which became the first Black Canadian band to be signed to a major label, Columbia Records, and is popular with collectors of funk vinyl. In the late 1970s, he embarked upon a solo career which resulted in two records, which are also sought after by D.J.s. Following his solo work, Rupert founded (with Errol Blackwood) and lead the Reggae band, Messenjah, which was signed by Warner Bros. Carl Harvey
Carl Harvey (born 1 October 1958) is a Jamaican born Canadian guitarist and record producer who recorded as a member of Crack of Dawn and The Aggrovators in the 1970s, and later became guitarist for Toots & the Maytals. Early life and education Harvey was born in Jamaica and emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada with his family at an early age. He began playing guitar aged 13 and also played the tuba at school. Career After listening to music by Jimi Hendrix, Harvey joined the Toronto funk and soul band Crack of Dawn, which was signed by Columbia Records and had hits in Canada with "It's Alright" and "Keep the Faith" in 1976. Devon (rapper)
Devon Martin, better known as Devon, is a Canadian rapper who rose to prominence in 1990 for his song titled "Mr. Metro", a controversial single about police racism. "Mr. Metro" subsequently became an alias of the artist. Biography and early career Devon was born in England, but raised in the Mississauga suburb of Malton, Ontario. He formed his first band, Shock Waves, at the age of 14, releasing an independent single in 1977. Leroy Sibbles
Leroy Sibbles (born Leroy Sibblies, 29 January 1949) is a Jamaican reggae musician and producer. He was the lead singer for The Heptones in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to his work with The Heptones, Sibbles was a session bassist and arranger at Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Jamaica Recording and Publishing Studio and the associated Studio One label during the prolific late 1960s. Dream Warriors were a Canadian hip hop duo from Toronto, Ontario, comprising King Lou and Capital Q. Dance Appeal was a Canadian supergroup of dance, rhythm and blues, reggae and hip hop artists, who released the one-off single "Can't Repress the Cause" in 1990. The song, a plea for greater inclusion of these predominantly black music genres in the Canadian music industry, was released as a direct response to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission's 1990 decision to deny an FM radio license to Milestone Radio for what would have become Canada's first urban music station; the single's title was intentionally chosen to result in the initialism "CRTC".
