Mertondale, Western Australia
Mertondale is an abandoned town located between Leonora and Laverton in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. A prospector named Fred Merton discovered gold in the area in 1898 and the claim turned out to be an exceedingly rich find. The mining warden suggested that a townsite should be declared in 1899, and it was gazetted later the same year. Merton's lease, named Merton's Reward or Merton's Find, was the main mine in the town. Merton himself suggested the name Mertondale. The gold petered out by 1910 and the town was deserted shortly afterward. A pastoral lease, Mertondale Station, takes its name from the old townsite, which is situated within the station boundaries. Leonora is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, located northeast of the state capital, Perth, and north of the city of Kalgoorlie. History The first European explorer to visit the area was John Forrest in 1869. On 21 June 1869 Forrest's party made camp near a conspicuous hill, which Forrest named Mount Leonora, after his six-year-old niece Frances (Fanny) Leonora Hardey. In 1895, gold was discovered in the area by prospector Edward "Doodah" Sullivan at the Johannesburg lease just north of the current townsite. In the following two years a number of rich finds resulted in rapid development of the area. The Sons of Gwalia gold mine brought Leonora to the attention of the world. Kalgoorlie is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district includes not only the town of Kalgoorlie, but significant parts of the outback in central and eastern Western Australia. Laverton, originally known as British Flag, is a town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, and the centre of administration for the Shire of Laverton. The town of Laverton is located at the western edge of the Great Victoria Desert, north-northeast of the state capital, Perth, and east-northeast of the town of Leonora, with an elevation of . About 20% of the population is of Aboriginal descent. The area is semi-arid, with a mean annual rainfall of . Mertondale Station
Mertondale or Mertondale Station is a pastoral lease, most recently operated as a cattle station, but previously run as a sheep station. It is located about north east of Leonora and west of Laverton in the Goldfields of Western Australia. Mertondale adjoins Nambi, Clover Downs and Tarmoola Stations. The now abandoned town of Mertondale once stood within the station boundaries. The town was gazetted in 1899 following a gold discovery, but was abandoned in 1910. Andrew McDonald retired from managing the property and left the area in 1950. The property is run in conjunction with Clover Downs Station. Together they occupy a combined area of and were placed on the market for 1.2 million in 2013. They have a carrying capacity of 9,000 sheep and 1,300 cattle.
