Mertens is a town in Hill County, Texas, Hill County, Texas, United States. It is located along Texas State Highway 22, State Highway 22. The population was 144 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Geography Mertens is located in eastern Hill County at (32.058545, –96.894887), in Central Texas. The eastern border of the town in part is the Navarro County, Texas, Navarro County line. Via Highway 22, Hillsboro, Texas, Hillsboro (the Hill county seat) is to the west and Corsicana, Texas, Corsicana is to the east. According to the United States Census Bureau, Mertens has a total area of , of which , or 0.18%, are water. Historical development The first settlers arrived at this location in the late 1880s. During this time, the St. Louis Southwestern Railway was constructed through the area on its way from Corsicana to Hillsboro. Hillsboro, Texas
Hillsboro is a city in and the county seat of Hill County, Texas, Hill County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,221 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. History Hillsboro was named for Hill County. At one point during Bonnie and Clyde's robberies in Hillsboro, they took the Peterson family hostage at their own farm. Later the Petersons said that Bonnie and Clyde held them at gunpoint until they surrendered their barn for them to sleep in for a few nights before running again. The city is known for its abundance of restored Victorian homes and its historic county courthouse, which on January 1, 1993, was heavily damaged by an electrical fire. It was rebuilt, courtesy of donations from around the world and two concerts sponsored by Hill County native Willie Nelson. Italy ( , unlike the country Italy) is a town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. Its population was 1,926 in 2020. The community was named after Italy by a settler who had visited the European country. History Italy was founded in 1879 by colonizers who found the surrounding land suitable for growing cotton, corn, sweet potatoes, and wheat. The Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad reached Italy in 1890, with the railroad stop making the town an important market center. International–Great Northern Railroad
The International – Great Northern Railroad (I&GN) was a railroad that operated in the U.S. state of Texas. It was created on September 30, 1873, when the International Railroad and the Houston and Great Northern Railroad merged. The railroad was officially incorporated as the International & Great Northern Railroad Company. At its start, the I&GN operated of track from Hearne to Longview, but at its peak it owned of track. As the railroad expanded southwestward from Hearne, it reached Rockdale in 1874 and Austin on December 28, 1876. The line extended to San Antonio in 1880 and finally to the US-Mexican border town of Laredo on December 1, 1881. The I&GN, like other railroads of its time, had many financial troubles and went into receivership on several occasions. Industrialist Jay Gould acquired control of the I&GN in December 1880.
