''Merry Christmas from the Beach Boys'' is an unreleased studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys. Planned for issue in November/December 1978, the content was a mixture of original songs penned by the group and traditional standards, similar to their 1964 release ''The Beach Boys' Christmas Album''. The album was produced by Brian Wilson during the same sessions as '' M.I.U. Album'' (1978), but ultimately rejected by Warner Bros. Records who were reportedly "highly skeptical" that Wilson was anywhere on it. Some of its recordings were later released on the 1998 compilation ''Ultimate Christmas''. Recording ''Merry Christmas from the Beach Boys'' was mostly recorded between November and December 1977 at the Maharishi International University in Iowa. Michael Rowed The Boat Ashore
"Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" (also called "Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore", "Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore", or "Michael, Row That Gospel Boat") is a traditional African-American spiritual first noted during the American Civil War at St. Helena Island, one of the Sea Islands of South Carolina. The best-known recording was released in 1960 by the U.S. folk band The Highwaymen; that version briefly reached number-one hit status as a single. It was sung by former slaves whose owners had abandoned the island before the Union navy arrived to enforce a blockade. Charles Pickard Ware was an abolitionist and Harvard graduate who had come to supervise the plantations on St. Helena Island from 1862 to 1865, and he wrote down the song in music notation as he heard the freedmen sing it. Ware's cousin William Francis Allen reported in 1863 that the former slaves sang the song as they rowed him in a boat across Station Creek. Tommie Connor
Thomas Patrick Connor (16 November 1904 – 28 November 1993) was a British lyricist and songwriter, credited with several hit songs over his long career. Stephen Kalinich
Stephen John Kalinich ( ; born 1942) is an American poet mostly known for his songwriting collaborations with Brian and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. In 1969, he recorded his only album, '' A World of Peace Must Come'', with production by Brian Wilson. It was unreleased until 2008. Biography Kalinich was born in Endicott, New York. He drifted from the East Coast to California in the mid-1960s, transferring from Syracuse University's Harpur College (now Binghamton University) to UCLA. At Syracuse, he was friends with singer-songwriter Felix Cavaliere, and they both were in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Jerry Ivan Allison (August 31, 1939 – August 22, 2022) was an American musician, best known as the drummer for the Crickets and co-writer of their hits "That'll Be the Day" and " Peggy Sue", recorded with Buddy Holly. His only solo chart entry on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 was " Real Wild Child", issued in 1958 under the name Ivan. Allison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Norman Petty
Norman Petty (May 25, 1927 – August 15, 1984) was an American musician, record producer, publisher, radio station owner, and considered to be one of the founding fathers of early rock & roll. Biography Petty was born in the small town of Clovis, New Mexico. He began playing piano at a young age. While in high school, he regularly performed on a 15-minute show on a local radio station. After his graduation in 1945, he was drafted into the United States Air Force. When he returned, he married his high-school sweetheart Violet Ann Brady on June 20, 1948.
