Jean Baptiste Van Merlen
Major General Jean Baptiste Baron van Merlen (11 May 1772–18 June 1815) (also spelt Joannes Baptista Baron van Merlen) was a Dutch-Belgian army officer who, following the varied fortunes of his homeland, fought on both sides during the French Revolutionary Wars, French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Fighting in a series of campaigns in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, he played an important part in the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, where he was killed in action. Early life and French Service Merlen was born in Antwerp on 11 May 1772, fifth of the thirteen children of merchant Bernardus Josephus Antonius van Merlen and his wife Isabelle Caroline Ligeois. At age fifteen, he travelled to Brussels and became volunteer in the service of the state of Brabant on 17 March 1788. Jean Baptiste Merlen
Jean Baptiste Merlen (1769–1850) was a French engraver and medallist. Biography Merlen began work at the Paris Mint, where he was responsible for designing the medal which celebrated Napoleon's coronation as Emperor in 1804. In 1815, after Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, Merlen’s post at the Paris Mint was uncertain. As a result, he left and moved to London where he searched for work eventually being offered a post at the Royal Mint from February 1820. It is believed Benedetto Pistrucci, an established engraver at the Royal Mint in London, may well have met him in France and offered the post to Merlen in London. As Merlen was not eligible for a full-time post at the Royal Mint, he was hired on a temporary basis, with a salary of four guineas (84 shillings)-a-week, equivalent to £ as of . Jocelyn Merlen
Jocelyn Merlen (born 24 November 1972) is a French former footballer who played as a right-back. Playing career Merlen never played in a professional division during his career, but participated in the 2000 Coupe de France final with Calais. The final score eventually turned out to be a 2–1 victory in the favor of Nantes. Earlier in the tournament, he scored the game-winning goal off a free-kick in their 2–1 win over top-flight Strasbourg in the quarter-finals. Merlen participated in a commemorative rematch against Nantes 20 years later at the Stade de l'Épopée in Calais.
