Merkys
The Merkys ( be, Мяркіс ''Miarkis'') is a river in southern Lithuania and northern Belarus. It flows for through Belarus, along the Belarusian–Lithuanian border, and through Lithuania before joining the Nemunas near Merkinė. Merkys is mostly fed by underground streams and therefore is cooler during summers and has smaller fluctuations in water level than other rivers of Lithuania, rivers in Lithuania. Near Žagarinė ( before its mouth) the Merkys is connected with Lake Papys by a canal. The Vokė originates from this lake and consumes most of the Merkys' water. Before the canal average discharge of the Merkys is and below it only . At the end of the 19th century the drainage basin of the Merkys grew by some as its tributary Ūla overtook some of the Kotra (river), Kotra's watershed area. Merkinė
Merkinė is a town in the Dzūkija National Park in Lithuania, located at the confluence of the Merkys, Stangė, and Nemunas rivers. Merkinė is one of the oldest settlements in Lithuania. The first settlers inhabited the confluence of Merkys and Nemunas in the 9th-10th century BC, at the end of the Paleolithic. On top of Merkinė hill-fort stood one of the most important Lithuanian castles, built in the 13th century, which guarded against invasions of the Teutonic Order. Merkinė was a part of a strategic triangle - Kaunas - Vilnius - Merkinė, protected with the chains of hillforts and castles. The center of Merkinė town is a state-protected urbanistic monument. Merkinė is an important point of Lithuania's domestic tourism. The Ūla ( be, Ула) is a river in Dzūkija National Park in southern Lithuania and northern Belarus. Its total length is 84 km. Varėnė
Varėnė is a river of Alytus district municipality and Varėna district municipality, Alytus County, southern Lithuania. It flows for 48 kilometres and has a basin area of 411 km². The Varėnė begins near Skaičionys village. There are a lot of water springs at its upper course. Varėnė crosses the Varėnis Lake near its mouth. It joins the Merkys near Varėna city. Kotra (river)
The Kotra ( be, Котра; lt, Katra) is a river in Belarus and Lithuania. The river is an example of a rare phenomenon of river bifurcation. At first, the Kotra and Ūla form one river, known as the Pelesa, which originates in Belarus and flows in a northwestern direction. Just past the Belarus–Lithuania border, between the villages of and Kazliškės, some southeast of Varėna, it branches out into two independent rivers: the Kotra, a tributary of the Neman, and the Ūla, a tributary of the Merkys. This situation arose in the second half of the 19th century when the Ūla, due to its channel erosion, crossed the water divide between its own and the Kotra's drainage basins. As a result, the Ūla enlarged its basin by some and the Kotra lost two of its tributaries.
