Meridian Highway Bridge
The Meridian Highway Bridge is a bridge that formerly carried U.S. Route 81 across the Missouri River between Nebraska and South Dakota. The Meridian Highway Bridge connects Yankton, South Dakota with rural Cedar County, Nebraska. The Meridian Bridge is a double deck bridge, with the top level having carried traffic into South Dakota from Nebraska, and the lower level having carried traffic into Nebraska from South Dakota. History The bridge crosses the Missouri River, connecting Yankton, South Dakota to the north with Cedar County, Nebraska to the south. Prior to the construction of the bridge, traffic moved between these two points via a ferry service, started in 1870, and a seasonal pontoon bridge, first installed in 1890. The pontoon bridge was disassembled and rebuilt twice a year, once to float on open water, and once to be placed on solid ice. SD 19
South Dakota Highway 19 (SD 19) is a state highway in southeastern South Dakota, United States. It connects the Nebraska state line, south of Vermillion, with the southeastern part of the Madison area, via Viborg, Hurley, Parker, and Humboldt. SD 19 formerly entered Centerville, but was shifted to the south. Its former path was redesignated as SD 19A. Its former southern terminus was at Vermillion, but was extended when a new bridge from Nebraska opened. Route description SD 19 begins at the Nebraska state line south of Vermillion, in the south-central part of Clay County. Vermillion–Newcastle Bridge
The Vermillion, South Dakota, Vermillion–Newcastle, Nebraska, Newcastle Bridge is a Nebraska and South Dakota Border crossing of the Missouri River. It joins Nebraska Highway 15 to South Dakota Highway 19. The Dedication Ceremony was held on November 10, 2001. The dedication ceremonies were held on the Nebraska side of the bridge at the overlook. The bridge crosses the Missouri National Recreational River, a unit of the National Park Service (NPS). The NPS maintains the Mulberry Bend Overlook on the Nebraska side of the bridge with scenic overlooks and a 3/4 mile trail along the Missouri River. US 81
U.S. Route 81 or U.S. Highway 81 (US 81) is a major north–south U.S. highway that extends for in the central United States and is one of the original United States Numbered Highways established in 1926 by the American Association of State Highway Officials. The route of US 81 follows that of the old Meridian Highway (so called because it roughly followed the Sixth Principal Meridian of the US Public Land Survey System) which dates back as early as 1911. The highway has alternately (and unofficially) been known as part of the Pan-American Highway. In the segment in the state of Oklahoma, the highway closely corresponds to the old Chisholm Trail for cattle drives from Texas to railheads in Kansas in the 1860s and 1870s. As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus is just north of Pembina, North Dakota, at the Canadian border. Gavins Point Dam
Gavins Point Dam is a long embankment rolled-earth and chalk-fill dam which spans the Missouri River and impounds Lewis and Clark Lake. The dam joins Cedar County, Nebraska with Yankton County, South Dakota a distance of 811.1 river miles (1,305 km) upstream of St. Louis, Missouri, where the river joins the Mississippi River. The dam and hydroelectric power plant were constructed as the Gavins Point Project from 1952 to 1957 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Pick-Sloan Plan. The dam is located approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) west or upstream of Yankton, South Dakota.
