The Meridian Micropolitan Statistical Area is a micropolitan area in east central Mississippi that covers three counties - Clarke, Kemper, and Lauderdale. As of the 2000 census, the μSA had a population of 106,569 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 106,139). According to the 2010 Census, the population is of 107,449. Shubuta, Mississippi
Shubuta is a town in Clarke County, Mississippi, United States, which is located on the eastern border of the state. The population was 441 as of the 2010 census, down from 651 at the 2000 census. Developed around an early 19th-century trading post on the Chickasawhay River, it was built near a Choctaw town. Shubuta is a Choctaw word meaning "smokey water". East of the town is a bridge over the river; it is known as the "Hanging Bridge". It was the site of the 20th-century lynch murders of four young blacks in 1918, two of whom were pregnant women, and two male youths in 1942. National newspapers covered the lynchings, and the NAACP conducted investigations in both cases. No one was prosecuted for the murders. In addition to recognition of historic houses in town, the Shubuta Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in state and national history. Lauderdale, Mississippi
Lauderdale is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, United States. The population of Lauderdale was 395 at the 2020 census. It is located along U.S. Highway 45, northeast of Meridian. History Early history Lauderdale was first inhabited by Native Americans. The first recorded Native Americans in the area were the Choctaw, who had a village named Panti on Ponta Creek near the present site of Lauderdale. In 1800, Samuel Dale guided some of the first European settlers to the area, including James Lauderdale. Lauderdale was originally from Tennessee but settled at the mineral springs in the area and named them Lauderdale Springs. Electric Mills is an unincorporated community in Kemper County, Mississippi. It lies along U.S. Route 45 east of the city of De Kalb, the county seat of Kemper County. History The town of Electric Mills was established in 1913 and named after its modern, electrically powered mill; one of the first mills to be completely electric-powered. In 1914, Electric Mills and Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina were selected by the United States Public Health Service as sites to conduct fieldwork on the prevention of malaria. Through improved drainage and the use of quinine, both towns experienced significant reductions in the disease. Much of the town was removed after milling ceased in 1941. De Soto, Mississippi
De Soto is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Clarke County, Mississippi, United States. It was first named as a CDP in the 2020 Census which listed a population of 274. History De Soto was named after Hernando de Soto. De Soto was one of four principle towns established in Clarke County before the American Civil War. Established along the Chickasawhay River before the arrival of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, construction of housing in De Soto may have started as early as 1845 and by 1858 churches were being erected. The town had a Post Office and two churches in 1900 when the population was 258. A post office operated under the name De Soto from 1856 to 1978.
