Merel Smulders
Merel Smulders (born 23 January 1998 in Horssen) is a Dutch BMX rider. Career She was the silver medal winner at the 2018 UCI BMX World Championships behind her sister Laura Smulders. Prior to this became junior World Time Trial Champion at the 2016 UCI BMX World Championships. At the Cycling at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Women's BMX racing, 2020 Summer Games BMX Race she won the bronze medal. Personal life She is the younger sister of Laura Smulders, who won bronze in Cycling at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's BMX, BMX at the 2012 Olympics. BMX Racing
BMX racing is a type of off-road bicycle racing. The format of BMX was derived from motocross racing. BMX bicycle racing, races are sprint races on purpose-built off-road single-lap race tracks. The track usually consists of a starting gate for up to eight racers, a groomed, serpentine, dirt race course made of various jumps and rollers and a finish line. The course is usually about wide and has large banked corners, which are angled inward, that help the riders maintain speed. The sport of BMX racing is facilitated by a number of regional and international sanctioning bodies. They provide rules for sanctioning the conduct of the flying, specify age group and skill-level classifications among the racers, and maintain some kind of points-accumulation system over the racing season.
