Anglo-Irish People
Anglo-Irish people () denotes an ethnic, social and religious grouping who are mostly the descendants and successors of the English Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. They mostly belong to the Anglican Church of Ireland, which was the established church of Ireland until 1871, or to a lesser extent one of the English dissenting churches, such as the Methodist church, though some were Roman Catholics. They often defined themselves as simply "British", and less frequently "Anglo-Irish", "Irish" or "English". Henry Meredyth (1675 – 12 December 1715) was an Irish politician. Meredyth was the son of Charles Meredyth and his first wife, Anne Blayney. He represented Kells in the Irish House of Commons between 1710 and 1713, being elected to replace his late father. He subsequently sat for the Navan constituency from 1713 to 1714.E. M. James Herbert Gustavus Meredyth Somerville, 2nd Baron Athlumney, 2nd Baron Meredyth (23 March 1865 – 8 January 1929) was an Irish peer and officer of the British Army. Early life and background He was the son of William Meredyth Somerville, 1st Baron Athlumney and Maria Georgiana Elizabeth Jones, was baptised on 25 April 1865 at Kentstown, County Meath, Ireland, and was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England. He succeeded to his family's titles on the death of his father, the first Baron Athlumney, on 7 December 1873. He sat in the House of Lords as Baron Meredyth (a UK barony created in 1866 - the barony of Athlumney being Irish). Military career Lord Athlumney served firstly in the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians), before being made extra ADC to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (Earl Cadogan). William Somerville, 1st Baron Athlumney
William Meredyth Somerville, 1st Baron Athlumney, 1st Baron Meredyth PC (1802 – 7 December 1873), known as Sir William Somerville, Bt, between 1831 and 1863, was an Anglo-Irish Liberal politician. He was born in 1802. Background and education Athlumney was the son of Sir Marcus Somerville, 4th Baronet of Somerville, in the County of Meath, and Mary Anne, daughter of Sir Richard Gorges-Meredyth, 1st Baronet. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Political career Athlumney was returned to Parliament for Drogheda in 1837, a seat he held until 1852, and served under Lord John Russell as Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department from 1846 to 1847 and as Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1847 to 1852 during the worst of the Great Famine. In 1847 he was sworn of the Privy Council. Sir Marcus Somerville, 4th Baronet (1772 – 11 July 1831) was an Anglo-Irish politician. Somerville was the son of Sir James Quaile Somerville, 3rd Baronet and Catherine Crofton. Sir Richard Gorges-Meredyth, 1st Baronet (7 May 1735 – September 1821) was an Anglo-Irish politician and baronet. Born Richard Gorges, son and heir of Hamilton Gorges, MP for Swords. Lieutenant-General Thomas Meredyth or Meredith (after 1661–1719), of Chelsea, Middlesex, was an Irish officer of the British Army and a politician who sat in the Parliament of Ireland from 1703 to 1719 and as a Whig in the British House of Commons from 1709 to 1710.. Early life Meredyth was the second son of Arthur Meredyth of Dollardstown in County Meath and his wife Dorothea Bingley, daughter of John Bingley of Dublin. He was originally intended for a legal career but joined the military instead. He served William III as a cavalry officer in Flanders during the Nine Years' War. In April 1691, he was made Captain in the 3rd Horse, later 2nd Dragoon Guards. He later became Lieutenant-Colonel, and on 1 June 1701 was appointed Adjutant-General of the Forces with promotion to the brevet rank of Colonel of Horse.
