Mere, Cheshire
Mere is a civil parish and linear village along the old course of the A556 road in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, North West England, about south-west of Altrincham. Bucklow Hill is at its northeast end, and the Mere crossroads is at the southwest end. The village of Mere is about a mile long and has a varied stock of housing. Most houses are large and have ample gardens leading down to the lake; these are along the inner sides of a triangle formed by the A556, A50 and A5034 roads. Inside the triangle is a lake after which Mere was named, and a golf and country club. Geography The village of Mere has three hotels (The Swan, The Mere Resort and Spa (formerly known as Mere Golf and Country Club) and Mere Court Hotel), a filling station (Orchard Service Station), and two car dealers (Bucklow Hill Garage and Parkside Cars). Cheshire East is a unitary authority area with Borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. The local authority is Cheshire East Council. Murder Of Jacqueline Ansell-Lamb
Jacqueline Susan Ansell-Lamb (21 September 1951 – 14 March 1970) and Barbara Janet Mayo (20 March 1946 – 12 October 1970) were two young women who were murdered in separate incidents in 1970. Both women were last seen hitch-hiking along motorways in England, and both were sexually assaulted before being strangled to death. Although the murders occurred seven months apart and a considerable distance from each other, investigators suspect both murders were committed by the same perpetrator. Links between the two murders are often erroneously reported to have been proven via DNA testing, and although detectives announced in 1990 that the women's murders were likely linked, a DNA profile was not isolated in either case until 1997, and only in the case of Mayo. Mere New Hall
Mere New Hall stood to the east of the village of Mere and the junction of the A566 and A50 roads in Cheshire, England. It was largely destroyed by fire in 1975. It was built in 1834 for Peter Langford Brooke to replace Mere Old Hall, the architect being Thomas Johnson of Lichfield. It was a large symmetrical house in Elizabethan style, constructed in brick and decorated with diapering. Its features included a porte-cochère, turrets, and shaped gables. However the house proved to be too large for the family and they returned to the Old Hall in 1914, letting the New Hall initially to George Smith Ollerenshaw and his wife Hannah who opened it to Belgian officers wounded in World War One. Eventually it was sold and became a country club in 1938. In 1975 most of the building was destroyed by fire, although a fragment of it remains, together with a modern extension. Mere Old Hall
Mere Old Hall is a 17th-century country house which stands to the west of the village of Mere and the junction of the A566 and A50 roads in Cheshire, England. The house was constructed in brick and stone that has been whitewashed and rendered, roofed with tiles and slates, and is in two and three storeys. Its architectural style is Regency. The house is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. Also separately listed at Grade II are the kitchen garden walls and attached sheds. History An earlier house on the site was rebuilt in the 17th century by Sir Peter Brooke MP, a member of the Brooke family of Norton Priory, who had bought the house in 1652 from the Mere family. It was extended in stages, and by the early 18th century had become a large brick house with eleven bays by nine bays. Knutsford () is a market town in the borough of Cheshire East, in Cheshire, England. Knutsford is south-west of Manchester, north-west of Macclesfield and 12.5 miles (20 km) south-east of Warrington.
