Mephisto is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appears in ''The Silver Surfer'' #3 (December 1968), created by Stan Lee and John Buscema and based on Mephistopheles – a demon character from the Faust legend, who has sometimes been referred to as Mephisto. Introduced as a recurring adversary of the Silver Surfer and Johnny Blaze, the second incarnation of Ghost Rider, Mephisto has also endured as one of Spider-Man's most prominent adversaries, being responsible for Harry and Norman Osborn's respective transformations into the Green Goblin and Kindred; and for the superhero's loss of his marriage with Mary-Jane Watson, considering their future daughter Spider-Girl his archenemy. ''The Amazing Spider-Man'' is an ongoing American comic book series featuring the Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man as its main protagonist. Being in the Earth 616, mainstream continuity of the franchise, it began publication in 1963 as a bimonthly periodical (as ''Amazing Fantasy'' had been), quickly being increased to monthly, and was published continuously, with a brief interruption in 1995, until its second volume with a new numbering order in 1999. His physical appearance and origin are an amalgam of Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Silver Surfer.
