Charles Menzies (Royal Marines Officer)
General Sir Charles Menzies, (12 May 1783 – 22 August 1866) was a senior Royal Marines officer. Although he became a respected soldier, fighting with Horatio Nelson in the Napoleonic Wars and later rising to the rank of general before becoming aide de camp to Queen Victoria, Menzies is best remembered for the founding of Newcastle, New South Wales and the successful commencement of its settlement between the age of 21 and 22. Archibald Menzies ( ; 15 March 1754 – 15 February 1842) was a Scottish surgeon, botanist and naturalist. He spent many years at sea, serving with the Royal Navy, private merchants, and the Vancouver Expedition. He was the first recorded European to reach the summit of the Hawaiian volcano Mauna Loa and introduced the Monkey Puzzle tree to England. Ivan "Jimmy" Menzies (1896 – 19 April 1985) was an English singer and actor, best known for his performances in the comic baritone roles of the Savoy Operas with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in Britain in the 1920s and the J. C. Williamson Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company in Australia the 1930s and 1940s. Sir Douglas Ian Menzies KBE (7 September 190729 November 1974) was an Australian judge, serving as a Justice of the High Court of Australia. He was also Chancellor of Monash University from 1968 until his death in 1974. Early life Menzies was born in Ballarat, Victoria, to Annie Wilson (née Copeland) and the Reverend Francis Menzies. Charles R. Menzies is a Canadian anthropologist and full professor. He is a member of the Gitxaala Nation of northwestern British Columbia and an enrolled member of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Early life and education Menzies was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, as the eldest of three children of Shirley Marie Menzies (née Naud), an elementary school teacher, and Harry Basil Menzies, a commercial fisherman. Menzies grew up working on his family's commercial fishing boat. As a commercial fisherman Menzies worked in the halibut longline, salmon seining, and herring seining fisheries. Menzies graduated from Prince Rupert Secondary School in 1980. He studied anthropology and sociology at Simon Fraser University. Hugh Menzies
Hugh Menzies (4 September 1857 – 13 February 1925) was an Australian politician representing the electoral district of Stawell in the Victorian Legislative Assembly between 1902 and 1904 as a Ministerialist member. He served as Mayor of the Shire of Stawell from 1895 to 1896. He was the older brother of James Menzies and uncle of Sir Robert Menzies, the 12th and longest serving Prime Minister of Australia. James Alexander Robertson Menzies
James Alexander Robertson Menzies (21 February 1821 – 18 August 1888) was the first superintendent of the Southland Province in New Zealand from 3 August 1861 to November 1864, during its breakaway from Otago Province (1861 to 1870). He continued serving on the Provincial Council after his superintendency ended. During Menzies' tenure as superintendent, two railways projects were undertaken, a railway to link Invercargill to the port at Bluff and a wooden railway to Winton. The former is now known as the Bluff Branch, while the latter was upgraded to the standards of a normal railway and extended to ultimately form the Kingston Branch. Menzies served on the Legislative Council for 30 years, from 1858 until his death in 1888, and promoted the interests of Southland. Alexander William Menzies (25 November 1882 – 1964) was a Scottish footballer who played as a forward for Heart of Midlothian and Manchester United in the 1900s. Born in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Menzies began his football career with local Blantyre Victoria in 1901. He signed for Hearts in December 1902, making two appearances for the club before being sent on loan to Motherwell then Arthurlie for a season apiece. On his return to Hearts he became a regular in the side, winning the Scottish Cup in 1906. In November 1906 Menzies was sold to Manchester United. He played for the ''Red Devils'' until the end of the 1906–07 season, making 25 appearances and scoring four goals, before being sold to Luton Town. He then moved back to Scotland with Dundee, Hamilton Academical and Port Glasgow Athletic, before finishing his career at Dumbarton.
