Alan Menter
Alan Menter (born 30 October 1941, in Doncaster) is an English-born dermatologist, and former flyhalf rugby union player for the Springboks. Rugby union Menter played his first international game on the South African tour of France in 1968. The Springboks won both games. He captained both the Universities of Witwatersrand and Pretoria in South Africa through his University career (1961–70) as well as playing for Guys' Hospital Rugby team and the Harlequins during his Fellowship years in London from 1971 to 1973. He also represented the South African Universities Cricket team against New Zealand in 1961. Personal life Menter attended Parktown Boys' High School, followed by medical school at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa in 1968. He completed his dermatology residency at Pretoria General Hospital at the University of Pretoria. Menter is Jewish. James Menter
Sir James Woodham Menter, (22 August 1921 – 18 July 2006) was a British physicist. He was born in Teynham, Kent and was educated at the Dover Grammar School for Boys, where he won a scholarship to study Natural Sciences at Peterhouse, Cambridge. His studies were interrupted by the Second World War, during which he was engaged on trials of Under Water Sound Detection systems at the Admiralty Research Station in Fairlie, Ayrshire. He completed his degree in 1945 and did a PhD on the subject of the use of the electron microscope to examine the micro-topography of surfaces. In 1961 he went to work at the Tube Investments Research Laboratory at Hinxton Hall, Cambridgeshire. There he was able to acquire the latest and most powerful Electron Microscope then available, the Siemens Elmiscop 1, and soon demonstrated its potential to determine the atomic structure of crystalline solids by resolving the structure of platinum phthalocyanine. She died at Stockdorf, near Munich. Biography Sophie Menter was born in Munich, the daughter of cellist Josef Menter and singer Wilhelmine Menter (née Diepold). She studied piano with Siegmund Lebert and later Friedrich Niest. At 15, she played Carl Maria von Weber's ''Konzertstück'' for piano and orchestra with Franz Lachner conducting. Her first concert appearances took her to Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Switzerland, and in 1867 she became acclaimed for her interpretation of Liszt's piano music at the Leipzig Gewandhaus.
