Menlough
Menlough () is a village in northeast County Galway in Ireland. Located 35 km from Galway, 27 km from Tuam, 30 km from Ballinasloe, and 20 km from Athenry, it forms part of the civil parish of Killascobe. History Historically, Menlough was in the Barony of Hymany which was a stronghold of the O'Mannion clan. The ruins of an O'Mannion castle are located in the fields behind the grotto in the centre of the village. Another O'Mannion castle in the parish is better known as there are more extensive ruins. This second ruin is known as Garbally Castle. It is visible to travellers from Galway to Menlough as they pass through Skehana (half parish of Menlough). Other historical monuments include the Catholic parish church of St Marys constructed in 1847, on land granted by the Ffrench family local landlords based in Monivea. Padraig Gearr Ó Mannin () was a United Irishmen, United Irishman who participated in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 in County Mayo. Ó Mannin was a native of Carnacregg, Menlough. Following news of the French landing under Jean Joseph Amable Humbert, General Jean Humbert at Killala on 23 August 1798, and of the rout of government militia at the Battle of Castlebar on the 27th, a party of several dozen men from Menlough and its surrounding area assembled and marched towards County Mayo, Mayo. However, after only a day, they were informed of the failure of the rebellion and were forced to return home. For several decades after there was bad blood between the United Irishmen of Mayo and Galway, with the former taunting the Galwegians ''Where were the Galwaymen in the fight at Ballina?'' Skehana
Skehana or Skehanagh () is a small village and townland in County Galway, Ireland. The name Skehana derives from the Irish ''Sceith eánach'' meaning "place of the whitethorn". Together with nearby Menlough, Skehana is a half-parish within the diocesan parish of Killascobe in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuam. An annual arts festival was held there in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The local Gaelic Athletic Association club, Skehana Hurling Club, fields hurling teams at underage and adult Junior A grades. Garbally Castle
Garbally castle is a late medieval tower house located in the parish of Skehana, County Galway. Location Garbally Castle is the dominant feature of the townland of Garbally in the parish of Skehana and sits at the junction of the R338 and the access road to St Kerrils Abbey. The Garbally townland is small, covering just over and is only ever know to have been occupied by two households. The name is anglicised from the Irish ''Garbh Bhaile'' which means "rough enclosure" or "rough townland". History Garbally Castle was built in 1499 by Malachy O'Kelly as a tower house, the Kelly clan being renowned in Ireland at this time as builders of fortresses. The castle was destroyed by MacWilliam De Burgo in 1504, he also destroyed two other O'Kelly fortresses at this time at Monivea and Gallagh.
