Charles Mendl
Sir Charles Simon Mendl (14 December 1871 – 15 February 1958) was a British diplomat and actor who has been described as "one of the most colourful figures in the diplomatic and social life of Paris". Early life Mendl was born in London in 1871, the second son of Ferdinand Mendl and Jeanette Rachel; their firstborn son was Sigismund Mendl. He was educated at Harrow School, after which he started a branch of his father's grain importing business in Buenos Aires. In 1912, he worked in Paris for a group of South American railway companies as a financial agent, having worked in South America as a railway director. He served as an intelligence officer in the 25th Infantry Brigade during the First World War and left after he sustained serious injury due to a horse falling on him in 1915. Sigismund Mendl
Sir Sigismund Ferdinand Mendl (2 December 1866 – 17 July 1945) was a British Liberal Party politician and businessman. Early life Mendl was born in Kensington, the son of Czech-born grain importer and shipowner Ferdinand and Jeanette Rachel Mendl. He was educated at Harrow School and University College, Oxford, graduating with second-class honours in Jurisprudence, and was called to the bar at the Inner Temple. Mendl was a grain importer, like his father, and served as president of the London Corn Trade Association from 1909 to 1912 and again from 1915 to 1919, and on the Royal Commission on Wheat Supplies until 1920. From 1915 to 1918, he was also a member of the War Office Advisory Committee on Army Contracts. Mendl was the first chair of Decca Records, a company that his grandson, Hugh, worked for. Hugh Mendl
Hugh Rees Christopher Mendl (6 August 1919, London – 7 July 2008) was a British record producer, A&R representative, and manager who worked for Decca Records for over 40 years. Mendl attended Radley College and then University College, Oxford, where he studied history. After falling in love with jazz music in the late 1930s, he abandoned his career in foreign affairs for sound recording and reproduction. Mendl's grandfather, who was chairman of the Decca Gramophone Company, landed him his first position in the business. During World War II he worked as an announcer for jazz radio in Jerusalem and on news broadcasts in the Mediterranean. He applied for a job at the BBC after the war but soon returned to Decca. He worked as a song plugger in the late 1940s, and began producing in 1950, working early in his career with Reggie Goff (his first recording), Winifred Atwell (producing her classic recording of "Black And White Rag") and Josh White. Jack Mendl
Jack Francis Mendl (6 December 1911 – 27 October 2001) was an Argentine first-class cricketer and educator. Mendl was born in the Buenos Aires suburb of Hurlingham, where his father was a grain trader. He was sent to England, along with his brother Derek Mendl, where the two were educated at Repton School. From Repton he went up to University College, Oxford to study English and history. He was denied the opportunity to play first-class cricket for Oxford University due to a skiing accident. He debuted in minor counties cricket for Oxfordshire in the 1939 Minor Counties Championship. He served with the South Wales Borderers in the Second World War, enlisting as a second lieutenant. He began teaching at the Dragon School in Oxford in 1945, and for the next decade he opened the batting for Oxfordshire during the summer holidays. Derek Mendl
Derek Francis Mendl (1 August 1914 – 18 July 2001) was an Argentine first-class cricketer. Mendl was born in the Buenos Aires suburb of Hurlingham, where his father was a grain trader. He was sent to England, along with his brother Jack Mendl, where the two were educated at Repton School. Mendl made two appearances in first-class cricket in June 1951, playing for the Free Foresters against Oxford University at Oxford, followed by an appearance for the Marylebone Cricket Club against Cambridge University at Lord's. He scored 59 runs in these two matches, with a high score of 26. He later emigrated to Australia, where he worked for Courtaulds and later for Qantas as an airline sales manager in South Africa.
