Memphis Americans
The Memphis Americans were a soccer team based out of Memphis, Tennessee that played in the original Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). They played from 1981 to 1984. Their home arena was the Mid-South Coliseum. A new version of the team will play in 2021 at Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi, a suburb of Memphis. History In May 1981, the Christian group Athletes in Action, headed by former stand out soccer player Kyle Rote, Jr., purchased the financially troubled MISL team then known as the Hartford Hellions and moved the team to Memphis. The team, renamed the Americans, played in Memphis through the end of the 1984 season before relocating to Las Vegas, but retained the name "Americans". The team's first coach was German Horst Bertl, who was an experienced player and coach from the Bundesliga, but new to indoor soccer. Steve Doerr
Steve Doerr is a retired American soccer midfielder who played professionally for the Memphis Americans in the Major Indoor Soccer League. Doerr attended Indiana University, playing on the men's soccer team from 1977 to 1980. In 1978 and 1980, the Hoosiers finished runner-up to the San Francisco Dons in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. In 1981, Doerr turned professional with the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He played one hundred games for the Americans over three seasons before retiring in 1984. Mid-South Coliseum
Mid-South Coliseum is an indoor arena in Memphis, Tennessee. The facility was opened in 1964, and became known “The Entertainment Capitol of the Mid-South” due its significance in hosting events such as concerts, sports games and professional wrestling shows. The Coliseum closed in 2006. In the late 2010s, efforts emerged to help preserve and refurbish the arena as part of a larger redevelopment of the surrounding area. Thomas Nevers is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the North American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. Youth Nevers graduated from E. O. Smith High School in 1974 where he was a four sport letterman (soccer, baseball, golf and track). He led his high school team to the 1972 state championship and was an NSCAA High School All American. Fred Grgurev
Ferdo "Fred" Grgurev (born September 14, 1951) is an American retired soccer forward who played professionally in the North American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. He also earned 14 caps, scoring one goal, for the United States men's national soccer team. Grgurev was born in Sutomiscica, a village on the island of Ugljan in Croatia. He was a former owner of the famed New York City steakhouse, Delmonico's. Professional In 1976 and 1977, Grgurev played for the New York Apollo in the American Soccer League. Jorge Espinoza
Jorge Espinoza is a retired professional soccer player from Chile who played in the Major Indoor Soccer League and National Professional Soccer League. He also coached at the high school, collegiate and professional levels including two games with the San Jose Clash of Major League Soccer in 1999. Player From 1972 to 1979, Espinoza played for Colo Colo in Chile. In 1979, he moved to the United States and signed with the Chicago Sting of the North American Soccer League. The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), originally known as the National Indoor Soccer League, was a professional indoor soccer league which began play in 2008. It was the third league to be known as the Major Indoor Soccer League after the MISL I and MISL II. Las Vegas Americans
The Las Vegas Americans were a soccer team based out of Las Vegas that played in the original Major Indoor Soccer League. Prior to Las Vegas, the team had operated as the Memphis Americans. They only played in Las Vegas during the 1984–85 season and lost in the first round of the playoffs that year. The Las Vegas Americans finished their only season in the league with a 30–18 record earning them second place in the Western Division of the league. Their home arena was Thomas & Mack Center, and their average attendance was 6,337. The Americans were expelled from the Major Indoor Soccer League on July 17, 1985 when the Board of Directors voted to terminate the franchise due to financial troubles. Art Hughes (American Soccer)
Art Hughes is a retired American professional soccer Defender (association football), defender who played in the 1980s in the original MISL I, Major Indoor Soccer League, the American Indoor Soccer Association, and the SISL currently the United Soccer League. Hughes attended Memphis Central, playing on the men's soccer team from 1979 to 1982. In 1981 Hughes was selected to the Tennessee All-State team, and would turn professional in the fall of 1982 with the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. At the end of the 1984 season he signed with the Louisville Thunder of the American Indoor Soccer Association, AISA playing three seasons and helping the team win the league championship in 1986-87.
