Salvador Toscano Barragán (22 March 187214 April 1947), also known as Salvador Toscano, was a director, producer and distributor of early Mexican cinema films. Biography Toscano was born in 1872 in Guadalajara, Jalisco. He began studying to become a mining engineer, however changed his career to become a filmmaker. He used a Cinematograph camera and projector which was first introduced in France in 1895. It was introduced into Mexico a year later when the first presentation of film in Mexico was made on 15 August 1896. Toscano opened Mexico's first public movie theatre at 17 Jesús María Street in Mexico City in 1897. Carmen Toscano
Carmen Toscano (October 19, 1910 - January 14, 1988) was a Mexican documentarian, poet, preservationist, producer, and actress. She is the daughter of Mexico's first filmmaker Salvador Toscano Barragán. She is best known for her 1950 documentary '' Memorias de un mexicano'', consisting of footage from her father's past films, which served as important milestone for the inclusion of Mexican culture in film, and was the first documentary film produced in Mexico. Over a career spanning nearly forty years, Toscano worked towards the conscious effort of preserving and emphasizing traditional Mexican culture to the rest of the world. Mexican cinema dates to the late nineteenth century during the rule of President Porfirio Díaz. Seeing a demonstration of short films in 1896, Díaz immediately saw the importance of documenting his presidency in order to present an ideal image of it. 1954 Cannes Film Festival
The 7th Cannes Film Festival was held from 25 March to 9 April 1954. With Jean Cocteau as President of the Jury, the Grand Prix went to the '' Gate of Hell'' by Teinosuke Kinugasa. The festival opened with '' Le Grand Jeu'' by Robert Siodmak. This was the last festival with a predominantly French jury. As the festival was becoming more and more a pole of showbiz attraction, scandals and romances of stars were appearing in the press. In 1954, the Simone Silva affair during the Cannes Festival ended up in the destruction of her career as an actor and her premature death, three years later.
