Members Of The Western Australian Legislative Council, 1952–1954
This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 22 May 1952 to 21 May 1954. The chamber had 30 seats made up of ten provinces each electing three members, on a system of rotation whereby one-third of the members would retire at each biennial election. Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. Leslie Diver
Sir Leslie Charles Diver (4 November 1899 – 4 August 1995) was an Australian politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1952 to 1974. He was President of the Legislative Council from 1960 to 1974. Only Clive Griffiths and Sir John Kirwan have served in the position longer. Early life Diver was born in Perth to Charlotte Ella (née Pearce) and Joseph William Diver. Leaving school at an early age, he worked for a period as a farm labourer and contractor before buying his own farm at Yorkrakine (a small Wheatbelt town) in 1924. Charles Latham
Sir Charles George Latham (26 January 1882 – 26 August 1968), often shortened to simply C. G. Latham, was an Australian politician, former leader of the opposition in Western Australia and the 10th President of the Western Australian Legislative Council. Latham served over twelve years as leader of the state's Country Party, and over thirty years in the Parliament of Western Australia. Latham also served roughly ten months in the Federal Parliament, as a Senator for Western Australia. Biography Latham was born in Hythe, Kent in England, and became an orphan before the age of 8 when his parents Thomas Latham (a coast guard) and Isabella (née Isum) died. Latham moved to New South Wales in Australia with his siblings in 1890 and married Marie Louisa von Allwörden on 24 June 1903 at Hay in the same state. Arthur Raymond Jones (18 January 1909 – 3 September 1967) was an Australian farmer and politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1950 until his death. Jones was born in Perth but was raised in the country, in the small Wheatbelt town of Miling. James Gordon Hislop
James Gordon Hislop (14 August 1895 – 4 May 1972) was an Australian medical doctor and politician who was a member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1941 to 1971, representing Metropolitan Province. Before entering politics he was better known as a hospital administrator. Charles Henning
Charles Harriot Henning (21 September 1897 – 22 June 1955) was an Australian military officer, farmer, and politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1951 until his death, representing South-West Province. Henning was born in Adelaide, South Australia, to Lavinia Eleanora (née Stewart) and Andrew Harriot Henning. His father, a barrister, was also a member of parliament in Western Australia. In 1917, Henning enlisted in the 1st Australian Imperial Force (AIF), serving as a trooper with the 10th Light Horse Regiment. Although he was formally discharged from service in 1919, he remained involved with the military as a member of the Citizen Military Forces, eventually reaching the rank of captain. In that capacity, he represented Australia at the coronation of King George VI in 1937. Henning enlisted in the 2nd AIF in 1940, and was subsequently promoted major. Metropolitan Province
An ecclesiastical province is one of the basic forms of jurisdiction in Christian Churches with traditional hierarchical structure, including Western Christianity and Eastern Christianity. Harry Hearn
Harry Hearn (24 October 1890 - 20 March 1956) was an Australian politician and businessman. He was a Liberal Party of Australia member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1948 until his death, representing Metropolitan Province. Biography Hearn was born at High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, England, where he entered the furniture-making trade. He migrated to Western Australia in 1912, and along with his brother Ernest, formed Hearn Bros and Stead Pty Ltd, based out of a converted church in Victoria Park, with each serving as joint managing directors. Their business expanded to become one of the state's most prominent furniture manufacturers, operating a two-acre site at Victoria Park and other factories in West Perth and Welshpool, and in 1950 expanded into the larger holding company Hearn Industries Ltd. William Hall (Australian Politician)
William Reaper Hall (3 May 1902 – 1 May 1963) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1938 until his death, representing North-East Province. Hall was born in Boulder, Western Australia. He attended state schools in Kalgoorlie and then began working as a miner. Hall later began working for the Kalgoorlie Tramways, and eventually became secretary of the Tramway Employees' Union. He was elected to the Kalgoorlie Road Board in 1933 and would serve until 1949, including as chairman from 1935. Hall entered parliament in 1938, defeating Catherine Reid Elliott, MBE, widow of the previous incumbent, Charles Elliott.
