Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. Electoral District Of Greenough
Greenough was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 2008. Greenough was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 colonial election. The district was based in the northern part of Western Australia's Wheatbelt region. It was abolished in 2008 when the number of rural districts was reduced. Geography Greenough was a rural electorate, surrounding but not including the coastal city of Geraldton. At its abolition, it included the towns of Kalbarri, Northampton, Mullewa, Morawa, Dongara and Three Springs. History Although held on occasion by Labor, Greenough was typically a conservative seat. Peter Coyne (politician)
Peter Joseph Aloysius Coyne (6 July 1917 – 4 November 2001) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1971 to 1986, representing the seat of Murchison-Eyre. Coyne was born in Geraldton, a port city in Western Australia's Mid West region, but his family moved to Yalgoo soon after his birth. After leaving school, he worked as a miner and metallurgist, and then at Agnew as a storekeeper. Coyne enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1941, and during the war served as a radio technician, eventually reaching the rank of flight sergeant. After the war's end, he returned to Agnew for a period, and then went to live in Perth, where he also worked as a storekeeper, television salesman, and life insurance salesman. Electoral District Of Nedlands
Nedlands is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Nedlands is named for the inner western Perth suburb of Nedlands which falls within its borders. History Nedlands was created at the 1929 redistribution, at which five new metropolitan electorates were created to replace former Goldfields seats in Parliament. Its first member was elected at the 1930 election, and for most of its first eight decades it was a safe seat for the Liberal Party and its predecessors. As such, it was held by a succession of senior non-Labor figures. From 1953 to 2001, the seat was held by the Court family. Hon. Sir Charles Court won the seat in 1953, handing it to his son, Hon. Richard Court, in 1983. Charles served as Premier from 1974–1982, and Richard became Premier from and 1993–2001. Charles Court
Sir Charles Walter Michael Court, (29 September 1911 – 22 December 2007) was a Western Australian politician, and the 21st Premier of Western Australia from 1974 to 1982. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life Court's family emigrated from his birthplace Crawley, Sussex, England, to Perth when he was 6 months old. He went to primary school in Leederville, and then to Perth Boys School. His Salvation Army parents induced him to play the cornet in their Sunday parades and he became a proficient player. He began formal music training at 12 and became a member of the RSL Memorial Band. He also inherited a strong union background from his father, a plumber, and joined the Musicians Union at the age of 14, playing in annual May Day parades. In 1930 he competed in the national band competition held in Tanunda and won the brass solo competition, the "Champion of Champions". Albany is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Albany is named for the port and regional city of Western Australia which falls within its borders. It is one of the oldest electorates in Western Australia, with its first member having been elected in the inaugural 1890 elections of the Legislative Assembly. It is regarded as a swinging seat, and has been held by the Labor Party since the 2001 election, at which Peter Watson was first elected. Watson announced his retirement prior to the 2021 election and was succeeded in the seat by Labor Party colleague, Rebecca Stephens. The Electoral district of Perth is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Perth is named for the capital city of Western Australia whose central business district falls within its borders. It is one of the oldest electorates in Western Australia, with its first member having been elected in the inaugural 1890 elections of the Legislative Assembly. Terry Burke
Terence Joseph Burke (born 1 February 1942) is a former member for the seat of Perth in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. He held the seat between 1968 and 1987. In 1974, with the Labor Party in Opposition, he was a member of the Tonkin shadow ministry. He is the elder brother of former premier Brian Burke and both are sons of former federal shadow cabinet member Tom Burke. Early life Burke was born on 1 February 1942 in Perth, Western Australia. His parents were Tom Burke, an Australian Labor Party politician in the House of Representatives from 1943 to 1955, and Madeline Muirson Orr. Tom Burke had Irish ancestry, and was deeply Catholic. Balcatta is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is based in Perth's northern suburbs. A historically safe Labor seat, it was held by the Liberal Party for one term between 2013 and 2017. Geography Balcatta is located in Perth's northern suburbs. It is a north-to-south elongated electorate, squeezed in between the Mitchell Freeway to the west and Wanneroo Road to the east. Brian Burke (Australian Politician)
Brian Thomas Burke (born 25 February 1947) is an Australian former politician who was the 23rd premier of Western Australia from 25 February 1983 to his resignation on 25 February 1988. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 30 March 1973 to 25 February 1988, representing the electoral districts of Balga and Balcatta at various points, and was the leader of the Australian Labor Party in Western Australia from 18 September 1981 to 25 February 1988. Burke studied law at the University of Western Australia for one year before dropping out. During the 1960s and early 1970s, he worked as a journalist for ''The West Australian'' newspaper, 6PM radio station, and Seven News Perth. He was elected to Parliament at the 1973 Balcatta state by-election, becoming one of the most popular local members over the following years. Electoral District Of Ascot
Ascot was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1968 to 1989. The district was based in the eastern suburbs of Perth. First contested at the 1968 state election, its first member was Merv Toms, hitherto the member for Bayswater, who finished his career as Speaker of the Assembly. He died on 8 October 1971 while exercising his casting vote for the Government on the floor of the Assembly, where the Government and Opposition were evenly divided. At the resulting by-election, 28-year-old schoolteacher Mal Bryce was elected. Bryce, who later served as Deputy Premier to Brian Burke in the Burke Ministry, held the seat until his resignation in 1988.
