This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between the 1956 election and the 1959 election, together known as the 22nd Parliament. Notes : On 17 December 1957, the Labor member for Warren, Ernest Hoar, resigned to take up an appointment as Agent-General for Western Australia in London. Labor candidate Joseph Rowberry won the resulting by-election on 25 January 1958. : On 11 March 1958, the Labor member for Pilbara, Alec Rodoreda, died. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. David Brand
Sir David Brand KCMG (1 August 1912 – 15 April 1979) was an Australian politician. A member of the Liberal Party, he was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1945 to 1975, and also the 19th and longest-serving Premier of Western Australia, serving four terms from the 1959 to the 1971 election. He resigned as leader of the Liberal Party in 1973, and retired from politics in 1975, dying from heart disease in 1979. East Perth was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 1962. Based in inner urban Perth, the district was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. The district's member from 1894 to 1904 was Walter James, who served as Premier of Western Australia from 1902 to 1904. When the district was abolished at the 1962 election, its member at the time, Herb Graham of the Labor Party, transferred to the new seat of Balcatta. Herb Graham
Herbert Ernst Graham (6 April 1911 – 17 March 1982) was an Australian politician. Biography Graham was born in Narrogin, Western Australia on 6 April 1911 to parents from South Australia. Graham attended school in Narrogin and Northam. His father, farmer William Graham, was a candidate for the Western Australian Legislative Council in the 1912 Legislative Council election. He later unsuccessfully stood for the Australian Senate in 1919, finishing with only 2% of the Western Australian vote. His nephew, Larry Graham later represented the Labor Party in the Western Australian Parliament from 1989. Electoral District Of Canning
The electoral district of Canning was an electorate in the state of Western Australia. The electorate, which was named for the Canning River which ran through it, was first contested at the 1897 election, but was abolished prior to the 1901 election, with most of its territory transferred to the new seat of South Perth. However, for the 1904 election, South Perth was abolished and Canning re-created. Canning was abolished for a second time in the 1988 redistribution. Canning covered much of Perth's inner southern region, being reduced progressively as suburban areas such as Applecross, South Perth, Victoria Park and Belmont developed and became populous enough to require their own electorates. By the time of its dissolution it corresponded approximately with the present-day Kenwick district and had become a safe Labor Party seat. William James Gaffy (8 June 1898 – 8 August 1970) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1956 to 1959, representing the seat of Canning. Gaffy was born in Adelaide, South Australia, to Margaret Mary (née Flanagan) and John Peter Gaffy. His parents moved to Western Australia when he was three years old. Electoral District Of Kalgoorlie
Kalgoorlie is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district includes not only the town of Kalgoorlie, but significant parts of the outback in central and eastern Western Australia. Long a Labor stronghold, the district was lost to the Liberal Party at the 2001 state election. The new Liberal member, Matt Birney, was re-elected at the 2005 state election but the district has changed hands at every election since then. History The district of Kalgoorlie was first created for the 1901 state election and has continued to exist as an electorate ever since. Over its first 100 years it was always represented by the Labor Party with the exception of two interruptions between 1905 and 1911 and 1921 and 1923. Thomas Daniel Evans (18 April 1929 – 27 February 1995) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1956 to 1980, representing the seat of Kalgoorlie. Electoral District Of Claremont
Claremont was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1901 to 1968. Located in the affluent western suburbs of Perth, it was a safe seat for the Liberal Party and its predecessor parties. At its abolition it included Claremont, Mount Claremont, Swanbourne and the western part of Dalkeith. It was abolished at the 1968 state election, with its area mostly transferring to Nedlands, and smaller parts to Electoral district of Cottesloe and the new district of Floreat. Harold Crommelin
Harold William Crommelin (9 April 1903 – 20 May 1998) was an Australian businessman and politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1956 to 1968, representing the seat of Claremont. Early life and career Crommelin was born in Perth to Annie Florence (née Loton) and Reginald Crommelin. His maternal grandfather was Sir William Loton, a member of parliament and Mayor of Perth. Crommelin attended Toowoomba Grammar School (in Queensland) and Hale School, and after leaving school worked as a farmer, eventually purchasing his own property near Pingelly. He later worked as a car salesman and accounting clerk, eventually becoming a partner in a clothing firm. During World War II, his company made greatcoats for the army. Electoral District Of Nedlands
Nedlands is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Nedlands is named for the inner western Perth suburb of Nedlands which falls within its borders. History Nedlands was created at the 1929 redistribution, at which five new metropolitan electorates were created to replace former Goldfields seats in Parliament. Its first member was elected at the 1930 election, and for most of its first eight decades it was a safe seat for the Liberal Party and its predecessors. As such, it was held by a succession of senior non-Labor figures. From 1953 to 2001, the seat was held by the Court family. Hon. Sir Charles Court won the seat in 1953, handing it to his son, Hon. Charles Court
Sir Charles Walter Michael Court, (29 September 1911 – 22 December 2007) was a Western Australian politician, and the 21st Premier of Western Australia from 1974 to 1982. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life Court's family emigrated from his birthplace Crawley, Sussex, England, to Perth when he was 6 months old. He went to primary school in Leederville, and then to Perth Boys School. His Salvation Army parents induced him to play the cornet in their Sunday parades and he became a proficient player. He began formal music training at 12 and became a member of the RSL Memorial Band. He also inherited a strong union background from his father, a plumber, and joined the Musicians Union at the age of 14, playing in annual May Day parades.
