This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between the 1924 election and the 1927 election, together known as the 12th Parliament. During the previous term, the Country Party had split into rival factions, the Ministerial Country Party (MCP) which comprised the bulk of the parliamentary party—many of whom had switched allegiance from other parties since 1919—and the Executive Country Party (ECP), which was loyal to the Primary Producers' Association, which the Country Party was intended to represent in Parliament. After the 1924 election, which significantly strengthened the latter at the expense of the former, the Ministerial arm merged with the Nationalist Party, as did the National Labor Party, which lost most of its representation in the election. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. James Denton (politician)
James Samuel Denton, (11 December 1875 – 3 June 1963) was an Australian Army officer and politician. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his actions in the landing at Gallipoli, and later reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. He farmed at Moora, Western Australia, after the war's end, and was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1921 to 1927, representing the seat of Moore. Early life and military service Denton was born in Port Adelaide, South Australia, to Margaret (née Smith) and Cincinnatus Denton. He was educated in Melbourne, and came to Western Australia in 1896, initially working as a clerk with Western Australian Government Railways. Denton enlisted in the Metropolitan Rifle Volunteers (part of Western Australia's colonial forces) in November 1899, as a second lieutenant. He was promoted lieutenant in 1902 and captain in 1907, by which time his unit had become the 11th Australian Infantry Regiment of the Australian Army. ... Electoral District Of West Perth
The Electoral district of West Perth was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. The district was named for its location immediately to the west of the central business district of Perth. West Perth was created as one of the initial 30 single-member districts, and one of only six in the Perth-Fremantle area, and its first member, elected in 1890, was Timothy Quinlan, a Perth city councillor and publican at the Shamrock Hotel. Quinlan became embroiled in a controversy regarding provision of state aid to private schools, which he and fellow Catholic MLAs Thomas Molloy and Alfred Canning supported. The Catholic Vicar General, Father Anselm Bourke, established the Education Defence League with their assistance. Thomas Davy (politician)
Thomas Arthur Lewis "Tad" Davy (1 May 1890 – 18 February 1933) was a lawyer and Western Australian politician (Attorney-General and Minister for Education). Thomas Davy was born on 1 May 1890 in Auckland, New Zealand, the eldest son of a doctor, Thomas George Davy, and his wife Emily, Gates. The family moved to London in 1894 before migrating to Western Australia in 1895. Dr Thomas Davy practised medicine firstly at Coolgardie, then Fremantle and West Perth. Davy went to school at Coolgardie, then in Fremantle and at the High School, Perth (now Hale School), where in 1909 he received a Rhodes scholarship. He left to study law at Exeter College in Oxford, before being called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1913. The following year he returned to Western Australia, practising law for a time. In February 1915 Davy joined the Royal Field Artillery and served in France from May 1915 until he was wounded in action in September 1916. Davy continued his service in India until 1919. ... Electoral District Of Kalgoorlie
Kalgoorlie is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district includes not only the town of Kalgoorlie, but significant parts of the outback in central and eastern Western Australia. Long a Labor stronghold, the district was lost to the Liberal Party at the 2001 state election. The new Liberal member, Matt Birney, was re-elected at the 2005 state election but the district has changed hands at every election since then. History The district of Kalgoorlie was first created for the 1901 state election and has continued to exist as an electorate ever since. Over its first 100 years it was always represented by the Labor Party with the exception of two interruptions between 1905 and 1911 and 1921 and 1923. James Cunningham (Australian Politician)
James Cunningham (28 December 18794 July 1943) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and began his political career in the Parliament of Western Australia, serving as a state government minister. He later served as a Senator for Western Australia from 1937 until his death in 1943, including as President of the Senate from 1941. Early life Cunningham was born in Wirrabara, South Australia to parents who could not write, and he received little formal education there. When he was about 20 he moved to Western Australia to become a goldminer. He worked at Norseman and then at Boulder. He contracted the disease silicosis through this work. State politics Cunningham was secretary of the Federated Miners' Union before his election to the Western Australian Legislative Council in 1916 as a Labor member. Electoral District Of Kimberley
Kimberley is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, located in the state's far north and named after the Kimberley region. The electorate has one of the highest Aboriginal enrolments of any seat in the Parliament. The seat has been held by the Labor Party since 1980—inclusive of one term under a Labor Independent (1996–2001), but has become increasingly marginal in recent years. It saw an extremely close and almost unprecedented four-way race at the 2013 state election, with relatively small primary vote margins separating the Labor, Liberal, National and Green candidates in a result that was not known for several days. Aubrey Augustus Michael Coverley (29 September 1895 – 19 March 1953) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1924 until his death, representing the seat of Kimberley. He served as a minister in the governments of John Willcock and Frank Wise. Early life Coverley was born in Bridgetown, a small town in Western Australia's South West region. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1915, serving with the 10th Light Horse in the Middle Eastern theatre. He was wounded in April 1917 and discharged from service later in the year. Coverley initially returned to Bridgetown after being repatriated, employed as a post office clerk but in 1919 transferred to Broome, in the North West. Yilgarn was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1894 to 1930. First created for the 1894 election, the district was located in the Goldfields region. In 1898, it was centred on the town of Southern Cross and included several other settlements along the Eastern Goldfields Railway, such as Yellowdine. Edwin Wilkie "Ted" Corboy (24 August 1896 – 6 August 1950) was an Australian politician. From 1918 to 2010, he held the record as the youngest ever Australian Member of Parliament#Australia, Member of Parliament. Early life Born in Victoria, Australia, Victoria, he was educated in Western Australia at Perth Boys' School, and enlisted for military service in June 1915, after having previously been rejected. He served at Gallipoli Campaign, Gallipoli and later in France, where he was wounded twice, first at Pozières and later at Flers, Somme, Flers, before being invalided to England because of injury to his eyes, the result of a gas attack.
