This is a list of members of the Victorian Legislative Council, as elected at the 2014 state election. Distribution of seats Members : Eastern Victoria Nationals MLC Danny O'Brien resigned on 2 February 2015 to contest the by-election for the lower house seat of Gippsland South. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Western Metropolitan Region
Western Metropolitan Region is one of the eight electoral regions of Victoria, Australia, which elects five members to the Victorian Legislative Council (also referred to as the upper house) by proportional representation. The region was created in 2006 following the 2005 reform of the Victorian Legislative Council. The region comprises the Legislative Assembly districts of Footscray, Kororoit, Laverton, Niddrie, Point Cook, St Albans, Sunbury, Sydenham, Tarneit, Werribee and Williamstown. David Davis (Australian Politician)
David McLean Davis (born 8 April 1962) is an Australian politician. He has been a Liberal member of the Victorian Legislative Council since March 1996, representing East Yarra Province from 1996 until 2006 when it was abolished and the Southern Metropolitan Region from 2006 onwards. He was state Minister for Health from 2010 to 2014 under Premiers Ted Baillieu and Denis Napthine. Early career Davis was born in Millicent, South Australia and studied in Melbourne, Victoria. He was educated at Kingswood College (Box Hill). He studied applied science at the Phillip Institute of Technology (now part of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology). Davis also later studied philosophy at the University of Melbourne. He worked as a chiropractor and maintained a private practice until being elected to the Legislative Council in 1996. Richard Dalla-Riva
Richard Alex Gordon Dalla-Riva (born 6 April 1963) is an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 2002 to 2018, representing East Yarra Province (2002–2006) and Eastern Metropolitan Region (2006–2018). He served as Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations and Minister for Manufacturing in the Baillieu Ministry from 2010 to 2013, but was dropped in a reshuffle when Denis Napthine replaced Baillieu as Premier. Dalla-Riva was born in the regional town of Orbost, but grew up in Beechworth, before moving to Melbourne. After graduating from the Macleod High School (now Macleod College), he joined the police force, and was promoted to the rank of detective in 1988. Philip Dalidakis
Philip Dalidakis (born 25 February 1976) is a former Australian politician. He was a Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch), Labor member of the Victorian Legislative Council, representing Southern Metropolitan Region from 2014 until 2019. Dalidakis was born in Melbourne. His father was born in Greece and his mother is Jews, Jewish. His maternal grandparents escaped from Germany to Shanghai in 1939, and Dalidakis's mother was born there, later migrating to Australia. He is married with three children. Before entering Parliament he was executive officer of the Victorian Association of Forest Industries, and later deputy chief of staff to Senator Stephen Conroy. Georgie Crozier
Georgina Mary Crozier (born 16 November 1963) is an Australian politician. She has been a Liberal Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council since 2010, representing Southern Metropolitan Region. She currently serves as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council. Under the Napthine Government, Crozier was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Health. Following the 2014 Election, she was appointed Shadow Minister for Families and Children, Women and the Prevention of Family Violence, adding the Housing portfolio in September 2017. Independent Politician
An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party, and therefore choose not to affiliate with them. Australian Conservatives
The Australian Conservatives was formed in July 2016 as a conservative political activist group in Australia and as a political party in February 2017. It was led by Cory Bernardi, who had been elected to the Senate for the Liberal Party, but resigned citing disagreements with the Liberal/National Coalition, its policies and leadership under Malcolm Turnbull. The Family First Party and its two state parliamentarians, Dennis Hood and Robert Brokenshire, joined and merged with the Australian Conservatives in April 2017. Brokenshire was not re-elected at the 2018 state election; Hood left the Conservatives to join the Liberal Party on 26 March 2018, leaving Bernardi as the sole remaining member in federal parliament, whose present term in the senate ran until 30 June 2022. Rachel Carling-Jenkins
Rachel Carling-Jenkins (née Carling) (born 2 September 1975) is an Australian politician. She was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 2014 to 2018, representing Western Metropolitan Region for the Democratic Labour Party (2014-2017), Australian Conservatives (2017-2018) and as an independent (2018). She did not recontest her Legislative Council seat at the 2018 election, instead unsuccessfully contesting the Legislative Assembly seat of Werribee. Jeff Bourman
Jeffrey Matthew Bourman (born 19 February 1967) is an Australian politician. He is a Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council, having represented Eastern Victoria Region since 2014. Jeff Bourman was the founder of the Victorian Branch of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party and has served as the Chairman of the Victorian Branch since its inception. Gregory John Barber (born 31 August 1966) is a former Australian politician, who was a Greens member of the Victorian Legislative Council between 2006 and 2017. Early career Barber obtained a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Melbourne Business School and was a successful investor. He became a corporate campaigner for The Wilderness Society. Melina Bath
Melina Gaye Bath (born 18 December 1966) is an Australian politician and former schoolteacher, who is a Nationals member of the Victorian Legislative Council representing the Eastern Victoria Region. Bath studied a science degree and diploma of education at the University of Melbourne and was a mathematics and science teacher at Mirboo North Secondary College. Prior to teaching, she ran a health food store in Leongatha for twelve years.
