This is a list of members of the Victorian Legislative Council between 1931 and 1934. As half of the Legislative Council's terms expired at each triennial election, half of these members were elected at the 1928 triennial election with terms expiring in 1934, while the other half were elected at the 1931 triennial election with terms expiring in 1937. : In October 1931, William McCann, Country MLC for North Western Province, resigned to contest the seat of Wimmera at the 1931 federal election. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Alan Currie
Sir Henry Alan Currie MC (6 June 1868 – 10 October 1942) was an Australian politician. He was born in Geelong to grazier John Lang Currie and Louise Johnston. He attended Melbourne Grammar School and then entered into residence at Trinity College (University of Melbourne), while studying civil engineering at the University. From 1896 to 1898 he worked in Western Australia as an assistant engineer for the Public Works Department, before his father died in 1898 and he inherited part of the family estates. On 11 June 1902 he married Muriel Miller. During the First World War he served with the Royal Field Artillery in Belgium and France; he was wounded, mentioned in despatches, and then in 1918 awarded the Military Cross. In 1920 he sold the Mount Elephant property he had co-run with his brother and acquired land at near Burrumbeet under the soldier settler scheme. John Harris (Victorian Politician)
Sir John Richards Harris (24 January 1868 – 16 September 1946) was an Australian politician. A medical officer in early life, he is also noted as the first producer of sherry in Australia. Life He was born in Chiltern to miner Thomas Henry Harris and Mary Richards Hollow. He attended Grenville College in Ballarat and then the University of Melbourne ( MB 1890, BSc 1891, MD 1902). From 1891 to 1892 he was the resident medical officer at Melbourne Hospital, and from 1892 was based in Rutherglen. Harris served with the Australian Flying Corps during World War I. At Rutherglen he had become a viticulturist, producing the first sherry in Australia in 1912. North Western Province (Victoria)
North Western Province (or North-Western Province) was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council (Australia), created in 1856 and was abolished in 2006. Victoria was a British colony in Australia when North-Western Province was created, it became a state of Australia on Federation on 1 January 1901. North Western was one of the six original upper house Provinces of the bi-cameral Victorian Parliament created in November 1856, each Province initially having five members. National Party Of Australia – Victoria
The National Party of Australia – Victoria is a political party in Victoria, which forms the state branch of the federal Nationals. Historically, it represented graziers, farmers and rural voters. However, the modern National Party no longer represents these traditional interests; shifting its focus to support the mining industry and as a result, ignoring the challenges faced by rural communities and farmers struggling with the effects of climate change and mining practices such as fracking. The Victorian Farmer's Union formed in 1914 was the precursor to the Victorian Country Party, later the Nationals. George Goudie
Sir George Louis Goudie (30 April 1866 – 30 April 1949) was an Australian politician. He was born at Homebush to schoolteacher George Goudie and Caroline Ashton. After attending state schools he acquired a farm at Birchip, and from 1904 also had a share in storekeeping firms. From 1895 to 1910 he served on Birchip Shire Council, with two terms as president from 1898 to 1899 and from 1907 to 1908. On 9 September 1890 he married Alice Maud Watson, with whom he had five sons. In 1910 he moved to Egerton, serving on Ballan Shire Council from 1914 to 1916, when he moved to Hopetoun. From 1917 to 1922 he served on Karkarooc Shire Council. In 1919 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for North Western Province; he was the first representative of the Victorian Farmers' Union, soon to become the Country Party, in that body. William Edgar (politician)
William Haslem Edgar (21 January 1858 – 6 June 1948) was an Australian politician. He was born at St Arnaud to Irish-born engineer Edward Edgar and Mary, ''née'' Haslem. He attended St Arnaud Public School and Stawell Grammar School before working in a Melbourne warehouse for five years. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Cecelia Bingley, around 1887. He worked as a draper in Dunolly and served on the borough council from 1885 to 1886 before moving to Melbourne in around 1888 to work as an estate agent. In 1902 he was elected to Malvern City Council, serving as mayor from 1906 to 1907 and leaving the council in 1909. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council in 1904 as the non-Labor member for Melbourne West, holding the seat until his defeat in 1913. Clifden Eager
Sir Clifden Henry Andrews Eager (14 June 1882 – 11 August 1969) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sorrento to Irish-born Anglican reader Clifden Henry Eager and Kate Amelia Andrews. He attended state schools and then the University of Melbourne, where he received a Bachelor of Law in 1909 and a Master of Law in 1910. Around 1909 he married Ernestine Isabella May Campton, with whom he had five children. He was a barrister from 1911. In 1930 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as a Nationalist member for East Yarra Province. He took silk in 1935, and during that year was briefly a minister without portfolio. The Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch), commonly known as Victorian Labor, is the semi-autonomous Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). The Victorian branch comprises two major wings: the parliamentary wing and the organisational wing. The parliamentary wing comprising all elected party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, which when they meet collectively constitute the party caucus.
