Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. History Victoria was proclaimed a Colony on 1 July 1851 separating from the Colony of New South Wales by an act of the British Parliament. The Legislative Assembly was created on 13 March 1856 with the passing of the ''Victorian Electoral Bill'', five years after the creation of the original unicameral Legislative Council. The Assembly first met on 21 November 1856, and consisted of sixty members representing thirty-seven multi and single-member electorates. Electoral District Of Kilsyth
Kilsyth was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It was a 41 km² electorate located in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, encompassing the suburbs of Bayswater North and Croydon South and parts of the suburbs of Kilsyth, Lilydale and Montrose. The electorate had a population of 52,701 at the 2001 census. Kilsyth was created as a nominally Liberal seat at the 2002 election. It was contested at that election by Liberal MP Lorraine Elliott, whose nearby electorate of Mooroolbark had been abolished in the redistribution. Elliott was not expected to face a serious challenge at the election, but amidst a statewide Labor landslide, was defeated in a major upset by Labor candidate Dympna Beard. Beard's narrow victory left Kilsyth as one of the most marginal seats in the state, and she faced an extremely close race at the 2006 election. Carlo Carli (Australian Politician)
Carlo Domenico Carli (born 6 April 1960) is an Australian politician, and president of association football (soccer) Brunswick Zebras Football Club. He was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 2010, representing the electorate of Brunswick. Early life Carlo was born in Melbourne in 1960. His parents came to Australia from Italy after WWII. They come from Vicenza, in the old Venetian republic and lived first in Carlton and later in Coburg. Carlo worked alongside his father at General Motors during his student years. After matriculating at Newlands High School, Carlo went on to study politics and languages at University of Melbourne. Christine Campbell (politician)
Christine Mary Campbell (born 30 November 1953) is an Australian politician. Education Born in Melbourne, Campbell graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education from La Trobe University. She later was Head of the National Women's Bureau in the Shop Distributive Association from 1974–80. She became an emergency teacher and adult migrant teacher in 1981, and joined the Labor Party in 1983. In 1989 she became an electorate officer, and from 1992 to 1995 manager of the Caroline Chisholm Society. Bendigo West is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It is a electorate centred on the city of Bendigo west of the Yungera railway line, and including surrounding rural towns to the west and south-west. It encompasses the localities of Bendigo City, California Gully, Castlemaine, Harcourt, Long Gully, Maldon, Marong, Newstead and West Bendigo. It also includes parts of the Bendigo suburbs of Eaglehawk, Golden Square and Kangaroo Flat. It lies within the Northern Victoria Region of the upper house, the Legislative Council. Robert Graham Cameron (born 19 March 1963) is a former Australian state politician. He represented the electorate of Bendigo West in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. He served as the Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Minister for Corrections (2006-2010 in the third Bracks Ministry and the Brumby Government). Rosy Buchanan
Rosalyn Buchanan (born 8 November 1961) is an Australian politician. She was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2006, representing the electorate of Hastings. Buchanan was born in Bairnsdale and was educated at Footscray Technical College. She was a volunteer support worker and support group co-ordinator before becoming a manager with Centrelink from 1989 to 2002. She was also a Shire of Hastings councillor from 1989 to 1992. Buchanan was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in a shock upset in the Bracks government's landslide victory at the 2002 state election. She unexpectedly won the new seat of Hastings, which had been viewed as a safe seat for the conservative Liberal Party of Australia, and had a notional Liberal margin of over 8%. John Brumby
John Mansfield Brumby (born 21 April 1953) is the current Chancellor of La Trobe University and former Victorian Labor Party politician who was Premier of Victoria from 2007 to 2010. He became leader of the Victorian Labor Party and premier after the resignation of Steve Bracks. He also served as the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs. He contested his first election as premier at the November 2010 Victorian state election. His government was defeated by the Liberal/National Coalition led by Ted Baillieu. Williamstown is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It is a 33 km2 urban electorate in the inner south-western suburbs of Melbourne, encompassing the suburbs of Brooklyn, Newport, Spotswood, Williamstown and Yarraville. The electorate had a population of 54,426 as of the 2006 census. Williamstown is one of only three electorates (along with Brighton and Richmond) to have been contested at every election since 1856. It is a very safe seat for the Labor Party, which has held it for all but two terms since 1889 and without interruption since 1904.
