This is a list of members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, from the 1902 state election held on 1 October 1902 to the 1904 state election held on 1 June 1904. From 1889 there were 95 seats in the Assembly. Victoria became a state of Australia in 1901. At the 1904 elections, 42 districts were abolished and new ones created. 1902 Victorian State Election
The 1902 Victorian State election was held in the Australian state of Victoria on 1 October 1902, to elect 70 of the 95 members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. The other 25 seats were uncontested. There was manhood suffrage in single and multimember districts (with multiple voting), and first past the post (plurality) voting was used. William Irvine replaced Alexander Peacock as Victorian Premier on 10 June 1902, and contested the election as the incumbent premier and leader of the conservative National Citizens' Reform League. Irvine soundly defeated the Liberals, and their Labor allies led by Frederick Bromley. Results The incumbent Reform League was returned with a comfortable majority, winning 47 seats, which led to the formation of the 1902 Irvine Ministry. James Boyd (Australian Politician)
James Arthur Boyd (7 July 1867 – 12 April 1941) was an Australian politician. Born in Portsea, Hampshire, his family moved to Ayrshire in Scotland around 1869, where he was educated at St John's Academy in Glasgow before becoming an apprentice painter. He migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, in 1885, where he had many occupations, including councillor on Port Melbourne Council. In 1901 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for the seat of Melbourne as a Conservative. He was an Honorary Minister 1907–08. In 1908 he left the Assembly, and in 1913 he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for the new seat of Henty. In 1917 the Liberal Party merged with the National Labor Party to become the Nationalist Party, of which Boyd was a member. Electoral District Of Gippsland East
The electoral district of Gippsland East is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers most of eastern Victoria and includes the towns of Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost, Omeo, Maffra and Heyfield. Gippsland East is the state's third largest electorate in area and covers 27,544 square kilometres. The National Party held the seat without interruption from 1920 to 1999. However at the 1999 election independent candidate Craig Ingram unexpectedly won the seat after receiving preferences from the independent, One Nation and Labor candidates. Ingram's victory affected state politics—Ingram and fellow Independents Susan Davies and Russell Savage contributed to the end of the Kennett era by agreeing to back Labor to form government after the 1999 election. James Cameron (Victorian Politician)
James Cameron (1846 – 13 July 1922) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Logie-Almond in Perthshire to farmer Alexander Cameron and Anne Pullar. The family moved to Victoria in 1854, settling first at Batesford and then at Beremboke. Cameron became a farmer at Orbost, and also developed business interests in mines at Nowa Nowa and in farm machinery. On 30 April 1879 he married Sarah Scouller, with whom he had seven children. He served on Tambo Shire Council from 1888 to 1892 (president 1885–86, 1890–91) and on Orbost Shire Council from 1892 to 1902 (president 1892–93). In 1902 he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Gippsland East. He moved the no-confidence motion against the Bent government in 1908, and was a minister without portfolio from 1909 to 1913. The electoral district of Evelyn is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly covering the urban fringe north east of Melbourne. It was first proclaimed in 1859. The seat has shrunk considerably in size as the eastern suburbs of Melbourne grew. It now includes the suburbs and towns of Coldstream, Gruyere, Lilydale, and Wonga Park. Ewen Hugh Cameron (24 July 1831 – 27 September 1915) was a builder, store-keeper and politician in colonial Victoria (state of Victoria post 1901), member for Evelyn in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1874 to 1914. Joseph Tilley Brown (7 February 1844 – 28 September 1925) was an English-born Australian politician. Early life Brown was born at St. John's, Surrey, England, to marine captain Joseph Brown and Amelia, née Tilley. The family migrated to Victoria, Australia when young Joseph was seven. He was educated at Geelong Church of England Grammar School before becoming a clerk, eventually joining the Bank of New South Wales. At Rochester, where he was the bank's first manager, he married Mary Ann Seward on 6 January 1874. Local politics Brown resigned from the bank due to a subordinate's irregularities and became a stock and commission agent. In 1878 he was charged with "boss-cockie dummying"; he subsequently admitted that he helped those in his family and circle of friends to exploit the 1869 Land Act.
