These tables are historical listings of state senators who served in the South Dakota Senate from statehood in 1889 until the present. Members of the South Dakota State Senate (1889–1939) 45 senators elected from 41 districts. Senators were elected from single-member districts, with five counties each electing two at-large senators. The number of senators was reduced to 43 senators from 1893 to 1899. A 42nd District was added in 1909. Members of the South Dakota State Senate (1939–1967) 35 senators elected from 33 districts. John Lawlor Jolley
John Lawlor Jolley (July 14, 1840December 14, 1926) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from South Dakota. Biography He was born in Montreal, Upper Canada (now Quebec) in 1840, where he attended the common schools. He graduated from Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He moved to Wisconsin in 1857, and enlisted as a private in Company C, Twenty-third Regiment, of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out as a second lieutenant on July 4, 1865. George Harrison Hoffman
George Harrison Hoffman (January 21, 1838August 31, 1922) was the second Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota from 1891 to 1893. Life George Hoffman was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania. In 1844 he moved with his parents to DeKalb County, Indiana where his father worked as teacher and farmer, while he attended the local schools. Later he worked as a carpenter and he was also engaged in agriculture. During the American Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army as a member of the Thirteenth Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After the war he returned to Indiana where he worked as a farmer until 1884. In that year he moved with his sons to the Dakota Territory where he founded a Ranch in Walworth County, South Dakota. Politically Hoffman joined the Republican Party. In 1889 when South Dakota became a regular US-State he was elected to the State Senate. Thomas Sterling
Thomas Sterling (February 21, 1851August 26, 1930) was an American lawyer, politician, and academic who served as a member of the United States Senate and the first dean of the University of South Dakota College of Law. A Republican, he served in the Senate from 1913 to 1925. He later served as dean and law professor at George Washington University Law School. The University of South Dakota School of Law awards "Sterling Honors" to their graduating top 10% in honor of their first dean. Early life and education Sterling, was born near Amanda, Ohio. Coe Isaac Crawford (January 14, 1858 – April 25, 1944) was an American attorney and politician from South Dakota. He served as the sixth Governor and as a U.S. Senator. Biography A native of Volney, Iowa, Crawford graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1882 and practiced law in Independence, Iowa before moving to Pierre, Dakota Territory in 1883. Active in politics as a Republican, Crawford served as Hughes County's prosecuting attorney in 1887 and 1888. In 1889, he was elected to the Territorial Council, the upper house of Dakota Territory's legislature. Alfred Beard Kittredge (March 28, 1861May 4, 1911) was a United States senator from South Dakota. Early life and education Kittredge was born in Nelson, New Hampshire, the son of Russell H. Kittredge, a physician, and Laura Frances (Holmes) Kittredge. He was raised and educated in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. Kittredge graduated from Yale College in 1882 and studied law with Wheelock G. Veazey of Rutland, Vermont and at the firm of Bachelder and Faulkner in Keene, New Hampshire. He then attended Yale Law School, from which he graduated in 1885. He was admitted to the bar in 1885 and commenced practice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
