This is a list of members of the fourth parliament of the South Australian House of Assembly, which sat from 31 March 1865 until 26 March 1868. The members were elected at the 1865 colonial election. Notes : Noarlunga MHA William Trimmer had been elected on a technicality after return from one polling place was declared invalid. He resigned at the first sitting, leaving John Carr as the duly elected member. : Light MHA Francis Dutton accepted the office of South Australia's Agent General in London on 29 September 1865. John Rounsevell won the resulting by-election on 12 October, but his seat was declared vacant on 16 November. South Australian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of South Australia. The other is the Legislative Council. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Adelaide. Overview The House of Assembly was created in 1857, when South Australia attained self-government. The development of an elected legislature — although only men could vote — marked a significant change from the prior system, where legislative power was in the hands of the Governor and the Legislative Council, which was appointed by the Governor. In 1895, the House of Assembly granted women the right to vote and stand for election to the legislature. South Australia was the second place in the world to do so after New Zealand in 1893, and the first to allow women to stand for election. Wentworth Cavenagh
Wentworth Cavenagh also known as Wentworth Cavenagh–Mainwaring, (1821 – 5 January 1895) was a politician in colonial South Australia. Cavenagh was member for Yatala in the South Australian House of Assembly from 17 November 1862 to 24 April 1881; and was Commissioner of Crown Lands, under Henry Strangways, from 3 November 1868 to 30 May 1870, and Commissioner of Public Works in the Henry Ayers Sir Henry Ayers (now pron. Encounter Bay was an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian colony (state of Australia from 1901) of South Australia from 1857 to 1902. William Everard (South Australian Politician)
William Edward Everard (December 1819 – 25 August 1889) was a South Australian businessman and politician. Everard was the son of Dr. Charles George Everard (1794–1876) and his wife Catherine (1786–1866), originally of London. The family, which included his mother and brothers Charles John Everard (ca.1822 – 22 July 1892) and James George (died 3 May 1840, aged 15), arrived in Adelaide on the ship under Captain John Finlay Duff in 1836. His father was one of the first eighteen elected to South Australia's unicameral Legislative Council in 1839. By 1843 William and his brother Charles were farming a jointly-owned property in Myponga, while Dr. C. G. Everard was developing his properties "Ashford" and "Marshfield", to the west and east of the Bay Road respectively, and comprising much of the land between Keswick and Glenelg. Francis Dutton
Francis Stacker Dutton CMG (18 October 1818 – 25 January 1877) was the seventh Premier of South Australia, serving twice, firstly in 1863 and again in 1865. History Dutton was born at Cuxhaven, Germany, where his father was British vice-consul, in 1818. He was educated at Hofwyl College, near Bern in Switzerland, and afterwards at the high school at Bremen in Germany. At 17, he went to Brazil as a junior clerk and was there for about five years, in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. In 1839, he joined his older brothers Hampden, Pelham and Frederick in Sydney, went overland to Melbourne, and followed mercantile pursuits for about 18 months, He then joined his brother Frederick at Adelaide and in 1842 or early in 1843, discovered copper at Kapunda, 45 miles north of Adelaide. He showed the specimen he had found to Captain Charles Bagot, who produced a similar specimen that his son had found in the same locality. John Dunn (miller)
John Dunn Sr. (13 February 1802 – 13 October 1894) was a flour miller in the early days of the colony of South Australia; a parliamentarian, philanthropist and a prominent citizen of Mount Barker, South Australia. Career He was born in the parish of Bondleigh, Devon, the son of a small farmer. At the age of 10 he was working as a servant, then for seven years was apprenticed to a miller at North Tawton. He was then appointed manager of a steam mill in Bideford, Devon and in 1836 owned his own mill at Monkleigh, some 6 km to the south. Electoral District Of Barossa
Barossa was an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the colony (Australian state from 1901) of South Australia from 1857 to 1938 and again from 1956 to 1970. Barossa was also the name of an electoral district of the unicameral South Australian Legislative Council from 1851 until its abolition in 1857, George Fife Angas being the member. Despite Labor not even contesting the seat at the 1962 election, Barossa was one of two 1965 election gains that put Labor in government after decades of the Playmander in opposition. Labor's Molly Byrne retained Barossa at the 1968 election however the seat was abolished prior to the 1970 election. Byrne successfully moved to the new seat of Tea Tree Gully. Walter Duffield
Walter Duffield (1816 – 5 November 1882) was a pastoralist and politician in colonial South Australia, Treasurer of South Australia 1865 to 1867. Duffield was born in Great Baddow, Essex, England, son of William Duffield, a farmer; the solicitor William Ward Duffield was a brother. Walter arrived in South Australia in the ''William Barras'' in December 1839. His first occupation was as manager for fellow-passenger Jacob Hagen's estate at Echunga, where his wine was some of the first produced in the colony. He left Echunga to build up the Para Para estate, near Gawler, and produced hams, wines and orchard fruit; he later had 40,000 Merino sheep. He started business in Gawler as a flour miller ("The Victoria Steam Flour Mill", founded by Stephen King JP) and merchant in September 1847, and, in conjunction with Harrold Brothers as Duffield, Harrold and Company (later Duffield, Harrold and Hurd), owned Weinteriga and Outalpa stations. John Colton (politician)
Sir John Blackler Colton, (23 September 1823 – 6 February 1902) was an Australian politician, Premier of South Australia and philanthropist. His middle name, Blackler, was used only rarely, as on the birth certificate of his first son. Background and early career Colton, a son of farmer William Colton (died 10 July 1849) and his wife Elizabeth Colton, née Blackler (died 1888), was born in Devon, England. He arrived in South Australia in December 1839 aboard ''Duchess of Northumberland'' with his parents and siblings, who settled at McLaren Vale and started a vineyard. Colton, however, found work in Adelaide, and at the age of 19 began business for himself as a saddler. George William Cole
George William Cole (15 January 1823 – 4 December 1893) was a politician in the colony of South Australia. History Cole was born in Lindfield, Sussex, the eldest son of George Cole (2 May 1792 – 20 November 1853) and Sarah Cole, née Cooper (c. 1787–1837). George married a second time, to Mrs Jane Mitchell in 1838. George, Jane, and George's seven children arrived in South Australia on 9 July 1839 aboard ''Lysander'' He was employed as City Valuator from around 1865. He was, like his father, a confirmed teetotaler, active in the Bible Christian Missionary Society and the Total Abstinence Society and important in the founding of Rechabites in South Australia. He was a lay preacher for the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Adelaide. He was a member of Parliament for the seats of Burra and Clare 1860–1862, with fellow teetotaler William Dale as his associate, and The Burra 1862–1866, when he resigned.
