This is a list of members of the 1st Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1860 to 1863, as elected at the inaugural 1860 colonial elections held between 27 April 1860 to 11 May 1860 (due to problems of distance and communications, it was not possible to hold the elections on a single day). Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Charles Haly
Charles Robert Haly (11 April 1816 – 26 August 1892) was a pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Pastoralist Haly and his brother William O'Grady Haly arrived in Australia from Newfoundland in 1838 and settled on the Hunter River before moving to the Gwydir River. From there they assembled a team of men and some 5,000 sheep and travelled north through the Logan district during the early 1840s in search of land. Shearing records indicate the Haly brothers had settled Taabinga station by 1846, at which time it was an established sheep property covering 305 square miles. Despite their early occupation of the land, the Haly brothers did not apply for a lease over Taabinga until June 1850, which was granted on 10 February 1852 for a term of 14 years. Electoral District Of Drayton And Toowoomba
Electoral District of Drayton and Toowoomba was the original seat for the urban settlement on the eastern Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia. History Drayton and Toowoomba had 2 incarnations: 1859 to 1873 and 1878 to 1912. Its first incarnation was as one of original sixteen electorates created in 1859, when Queensland became an independent colony. It was represented by one member. In 1873, its name was changed to electoral district of Toowoomba. Its second incarnation was in 1878, when Toowoomba was renamed back to Drayton and Toowoomba. It became a 2-member electorate at that time. In 1912, it was redistributed into Drayton (1912–1927), Toowoomba (1912–1960) and East Toowoomba (1912–1950). William Henry Groom
William Henry Groom (9 March 1833 – 8 August 1901) was an Australian publican, newspaper proprietor, and politician who served as a member of the Parliament of Queensland from 1862 to 1901 and of the Parliament of Australia in 1901. Early life Groom was born at Plymouth, England, son of Thomas Groom, cordwainer, and his wife Maria, ''née'' Harkcom. Groom was educated at St Andrew's College, Plymouth, and apprenticed to a baker. He was transported from England to Australia as a convict in 1846 for seven years, having been convicted of embezzlement, aged just 13. He was eventually released, subsequently convicted again of a similar offence, and served gaol time in the goldfields in what would later be the colony of Victoria. After he was again released, Groom eventually found himself on the Darling Downs in Queensland, where, despite whispers about his chequered past, he became one of the leading members of society. Warwick was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1860 to 2001. It centred on the town of Warwick. The electorate was represented by two Premiers: Arthur Morgan and Thomas Joseph Byrnes. It was also the seat of former Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg. Electoral District Of Town Of Ipswich
Ipswich is a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district on the Brisbane River, west of Brisbane in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate includes Ipswich and its suburbs, south and east of the Bremer River, west of Bundamba Creek and north of the Cunningham Highway. History The electoral district of Town of Ipswich was one of the original 16 established in 1859, when Queensland became a separate colony. It returned 3 members. In the redistribution of 1872, its name was shortened to just "Ipswich" and it became a single member constituency, due to the creation of the electoral district of Bundamba. In the redistribution of 1878, it absorbed the electoral district of Bremer and became a dual-member constituency. In 1912, it again reverted to a single member constituency, due to the re-introduction of the single-member electoral district of Bremer. Frederick Forbes
Frederick Augustus Forbes (30 September 1818 – 9 July 1878) was a politician in colonial Queensland and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. Early life Forbes was born on 30 September 1818 in Liverpool, Sydney, New South Wales, to Francis Ewen, a merchant, and his wife Mary Ann Taboweur. He attended William Cape's school and The King's School, Parramatta, before spending several years at sea. When his father died he took over his father's store in Liverpool in 1842 before marrying Margaret Milner in 1844. Politics Forbes soon moved to Ipswich where he opened another store and became involved in the Queensland Separation movement. Forbes became involved in politics and in 1860, along with Arthur Macalister and Patrick O'Sullivan, was elected to the new seat of Ipswich in the Queensland Legislative Assembly which he served until his defeat in 1863. Joseph Fleming (politician)
Joseph Fleming (6 January 1811 – 23 September 1891) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Politics On 22 June 1860, William Nelson, one of the three members for West Moreton, was unseated by petition. Joseph Fleming was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the resulting by-election on 9 July 1860. Fleming held the seat until he resigned on 3 November 1862 when he became bankrupt. Joshua Peter Bell won the resulting by-election on 15 December 1862. On 7 August 1866, the Premier of Queensland and member for West Moreton, Robert Herbert, resigned. Joseph Fleming won the resulting by-election on 11 September 1866. He held the seat until 2 July 1867 (the 1867 election) when he was defeated by Joshua Peter Bell (sitting member), Patrick O'Sullivan and George Thorn. Charles Fitzsimmons (Queensland Politician)
Charles Fitzsimmons (1802—1876) was an Irish-born politician and sugar farmer in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Charles Fitzsimmons was born in 1802 in County Cavan, Ireland, the son of James Fitzsimmons and his wife Margaret (née Lynch). Politics Fitzsimmons was elected as Member for Port Curtis in the Queensland Legislative Assembly at the inaugural colonial election on 4 May 1860. He held that seat until he resigned on 3 September 1861; Alfred Sandeman won the resulting by-election on 15 October 1861. Under the Additional Members Act 1864, the seats of Clermont, Kennedy, Maryborough, Mitchell, Rockhampton and Warrego were created. By-elections were held to fill the new seats on 18 March 1865. Electoral District Of Maranoa
Maranoa was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. History Maranoa of the original sixteen electorates established in 1859. Geographically it was based on the Balonne River catchment area, including the towns of Roma and St George. Despite various redistributions over the years, the electorate remained in the same general vicinity until its abolition in 1949 when most of it was included in the resurrected Electoral district of Balonne. John Ferrett
John Ferrett (1812–1894) was a pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life John Ferrett was born in 1812 in Dorset, England, the son of Harry Ferrett and his wife Mary (née Rabbit). He immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1835 on the ''Fairlie''. He worked as a station hand with the Dangar family at Gostwyck Plains, before establishing Wallann Station with them at Ipswich, Queensland around 1844. He established Wooinble Bank in Maranoa in 1862. Politics John Ferrett entered the Queensland Legislative Assembly on 4 May 1860 at the 1860 colonial election as the member for the electoral district of Maranoa.
