New South Wales Legislative Council
The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Members serve eight-year terms, which are staggered, with half the Council being elected every four years, roughly coinciding with elections to the Legislative Assembly. Judith Walker
Judith Mary Walker (17 May 1938 – 13 March 2001) was an Australian politician. She was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1984 to 1995. Biography Walker was born in Summer Hill and was educated at St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Concord. She worked in the insurance industry for twenty years, becoming state secretary of the Australian Insurance Employees Union. She was ousted as union secretary in 1984 amidst allegations of misbehaviour, but was reinstated in 1985 after a battle in the Federal Court. Tony Kelly (politician)
Anthony Bernard Kelly (born 25 August 1948) is an Australian former politician, who was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council representing the Australian Labor Party from 1997 until 2011. Following an investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption in 2011, it was found that Kelly engaged in corrupt conduct during the government purchase of a beach property in northern Sydney. Kelly did not face criminal charges. The Director of Public Prosecutions decided that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution for forgery and misconduct in public office. Michael Rueben Egan (born 21 February 1948), a former union official and former Australian politician, served as Treasurer of New South Wales between 1995 and 2005. The premier of New South Wales is the head of government in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The Government of New South Wales follows the Westminster Parliamentary System, with a Parliament of New South Wales acting as the legislature. Neville Wran
Neville Kenneth Wran, (11 October 1926 – 20 April 2014) was an Australian politician who was the Premier of New South Wales from 1976 to 1986. He was the national president of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) from 1980 to 1986 and chairman of both the Lionel Murphy Foundation and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) from 1986 to 1991. Early years Wran was born in the Sydney suburb of Paddington, the eighth and last child of Joseph Wran and his wife Lillian (née Langley). 1986 Rockdale State By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Rockdale on 2 August 1986. It was triggered by the resignation of sitting Labor MP Brian Bannon. The by-election was won by Labor candidate and Premier Barrie Unsworth. The Rockdale by-election was held the same day as the Bass Hill by-election. Barrie Unsworth
Barrie John Unsworth (born 16 April 1934) is a former Australian politician, representing the Labor Party in the Parliament of New South Wales from 1978 to 1991. He served as the 36th Premier from July 1986 to March 1988. Early years Unsworth, the son of Joseph and Olive Unsworth, was born in Dubbo, New South Wales, and educated in Sydney, at Kogarah High School. On leaving school at age 15, he was apprenticed as an electrical fitter. Greg Percival
Harold Gregory Percival OBE (4 April 1925 – 8 May 2011) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1977 to 1978 and from 1986 to 1988. Born in Campbelltown, Percival was educated at Ingleburn Primary School, Parramatta Intermediate School and Taylor's Coaching College. He became a telegraph messenger in 1941, and was employed by the Royal Australian Navy in this capacity from 1942 to 1946, serving in anti-submarine patrol boats in New Guinea and the south-west Pacific Islands. After the war he became a retail butcher. He married Diana Mary Drew on 2 June 1951, with whom he had three children. William Lloyd Lange (27 June 1937 – 24 November 2013) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1974 to 1986, serving as Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council from 1981 to 1984, and as Opposition Spokesman for Minerals and Energy and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party from 1984 to 1986.
