New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Wendy Machin
Wendy Susan Machin (born 14 October 1958 in Wingham, New South Wales), was the president of the National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA). She was the first woman member of the Nationals elected to the New South Wales Parliament and was Minister for Consumer Affairs and Minister Assisting the Minister for Roads and Assisting the Minister for Transport between 1993–1995. Early life Machin studied at Wingham High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts (Communications) at the New South Wales Institute of Technology She also holds a Masters of Commerce from the University of New South Wales. Ray Aston
Raymond William Aston (24 September 1943 – 23 May 1988) was an Australian politician. He was the Liberal member for Vaucluse in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1986 till his early death. Ray Aston was born in the Sydney suburb of Waverley, the son of William Aston, who was Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives 1967–72. Having attended Waverley College, Aston graduated from the University of Sydney, becoming an orthodontist. In 1986, he was selected as the Liberal candidate for a by-election to be held in the state seat of Vaucluse, which was being vacated by Liberal Deputy Leader Rosemary Foot. Rosemary Irene Foot, AO (born 2 April 1936) is a retired Australian politician. She was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1978 to 1986. First elected to state parliament as member for Vaucluse at the 1978 state election, Foot went on to serve as Deputy Opposition Leader from 1983 until her retirement in 1986. Kevin Moss
Kevin Joseph Moss (born 1 February 1946) is an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1986 to 2003, representing the electorate of Canterbury. Moss was born in Sydney, and was educated at St Pauls Convent School in Dulwich Hill and St Patrick's Church Hill. He was elected to the City of Canterbury council in 1973, and served as deputy mayor in 1976 and 1979 before being elected by his colleagues as mayor in 1980. He served as mayor until the year after his election to parliament, and was employed as a staffer at the party's head office during his period. Moss won Labor preselection to contest the state seat of Canterbury in 1986 when the appointment of former Labor minister Kevin Stewart as the state's Agent-General in London created the need for a by-election. Kevin Stewart (Australian Politician)
Kevin James Stewart (20 September 1928 – 22 August 2006), an Australian former politician, was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Canterbury between 1962 and 1985 for the Labor Party. During his period in office, Stewart held a range of ministerial portfolios, including as Minister for Health and Local Government. His brother, Frank Stewart, was a member of the Australian House of Representatives representing Lang and later Grayndler between 1953 and 1979, also for Labor. Bob Harrison (Australian Politician)
Robert Joseph Wilson "Bob" Harrison AO (born 19 September 1934) is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the seat of Kiama from 1986 to 1999. Harrison was born in Goulburn and attended local state schools. He was employed at the Pacific Supertex Chenille Factory in Goulburn before moving to Port Kembla in 1953 to work for AIS Steelworks. In 1955 he became a waterside worker, and also became active in the labour movement, particularly the Maritime Union of Australia. He was married on 20 October 1961 in Hobart, Tasmania, to Angela, with whom he has two daughters. In 1971 he was elected to Shellharbour Municipal Council and would remain on the council until 1991. Bill Knott (politician)
William Edwin Knott (16 February 1921 – 19 April 2013) was an Australian politician, elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. He was born in Sydney, New South Wales and educated at St Mary's College, Sydney and Christian Brothers College, Strathfield and Ultimo Technical College. He was apprenticed to the New South Wales Government Railways as an electrician. He worked for five years as an interstate transport contractor. In October 1949 he married Marie and they had three children, Judith, Michael and Peter. Peter Knott would go on to become a Labor member of the federal House of Representatives from 1993 to 1996. He was a member of Electrical Trades Union of Australia for 42 years.
