This is a list of members of the Australian Senate from 1941 to 1944. Half of its members were elected at the 1937 Australian federal election, 23 October 1937 election and had terms starting on 1 July 1938 and finishing on 30 June 1944; the other half were elected at the 1940 Australian federal election, 21 September 1940 election and had terms starting on 1 July 1941 and finishing on 30 June 1947. The process for filling casual vacancies was complex. While senators were elected for a six-year term, people appointed to a casual vacancy only held office until the earlier of the next election for the House of Representatives or the Senate. Coalition (Australia)
The Liberal–National Coalition, commonly known simply as "the Coalition" or informally as the LNP, is an alliance of centre-right political parties that forms one of the two major groupings in Australian federal politics. The two partners in the Coalition are the Liberal Party of Australia and the National Party of Australia (the latter previously known as the Country Party and the National Country Party). Its main opponent is the Australian Labor Party (ALP); the two forces are often regarded as operating in a two-party system. The Coalition was last in government from the 2013 federal election, before being unsuccessful at re-election in the 2022 Australian federal election. John Curtin
John Curtin (8 January 1885 – 5 July 1945) was an Australian politician who served as the 14th prime minister of Australia from 1941 until his death in 1945. He led the country for the majority of World War II, including all but the last few weeks of the war in the Pacific. He was the leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) from 1935 to 1945, and its longest serving leader until Gough Whitlam. Curtin's leadership skills and personal character were acclaimed by his political contemporaries. He is frequently ranked as one of Australia's greatest prime ministers. Curtin left school at the age of 13 and became involved in the labour movement in Melbourne. He joined the Labor Party at a young age and was also involved with the Victorian Socialist Party. Richard Nash (Australian Politician)
Richard Harry (Dick) Nash (2 July 1890 – 12 December 1951) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian Senate from 1943 until his death in 1951. Nash was born in the Melbourne suburb of Ascot Vale and moved with his family to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia in 1897. He received a primary education in Boulder then apprenticed as a mechanic and worked for the '' Kalgoorlie Miner'' newspaper as mechanic and proofreader. In 1910, he was employed by the Kalgoorlie tramways, serving as conductor, motorman and inspector, and being a founding member and later secretary of the Kalgoorlie Tramways Employees Union until 1916. In 1916, Nash relocated to Perth and worked on the Perth tramways. James Cunningham (Australian Politician)
James Cunningham (28 December 18794 July 1943) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and began his political career in the Parliament of Western Australia, serving as a state government minister. He later served as a Senator for Western Australia from 1937 until his death in 1943, including as President of the Senate from 1941. Early life Cunningham was born in Wirrabara, South Australia to parents who could not write, and he received little formal education there. When he was about 20 he moved to Western Australia to become a goldminer. He worked at Norseman and then at Boulder. He contracted the disease silicosis through this work. Joe Collings
Joseph Silver Collings (11 May 1865 – 20 June 1955) was a long-serving Australian politician. He was a hardworking Australian Labor Party bureaucrat with valuable writing and speaking talents, who was eventually rewarded by a five-year stint as a federal government minister. Early life Collings was born in Brighton, England and educated at Brighton Board School and by his parents. He reported for the ''Sussex Daily News'' before emigrating with his parents to Brisbane when he was 18. He worked as a farm labourer, failed as a selector and, in 1885, married Kate McInerney. He found work in the footwear industry and was at one time secretary of the ''Queensland Boot and Shoe Manufacturers' Association''. He worked with " scabs" during a strike in 1895 and was ostracised by the Australian Boot Trade Employees' Federation although he worked hard for the labour movement. Herbert Collett
Herbert Brayley Collett (12 November 1877 – 15 August 1947) was an Australian politician, librarian and soldier. Collett was born in St. Peter Port, Guernsey and arrived with his family in Western Australia in October 1884. He was educated at Perth Grammar School and became a librarian at the Victoria Public Library in 1891. He married Anne Whitfield in April 1904. Collett joined the Metropolitan Rifle Volunteers at the age of 16 and rose to command the 11th Australian Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant colonel in 1908. With the outbreak of the First World War he commanded the 28th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force from 23 April 1915 and he served at Gallipoli, in Egypt and Sinai and in France. On 29 July 1916, he was wounded at the Battle of Pozières. He returned to action on 12 October 1917 at the First Battle of Passchendaele. Don Cameron (Victorian Politician)
Donald James Cameron (19 January 1878 – 20 August 1962) was an Australian politician who served as a Senator for Victoria from 1938 to 1962. He was a member of the Labor Party and served as Minister for Aircraft Production (1941–1945) and Postmaster-General (1945–1949) in the Curtin and Chifley Governments. Early life Cameron was born in North Melbourne of working-class parents and was educated at the City Road Primary School in South Melbourne and South Melbourne College. Gordon Brown (11 February 1885 – 12 January 1967) was an Australian politician who served as a Senator for Queensland from 1932 to 1965, representing the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He was President of the Senate from 1943 to 1951. Early life Brown was born on 11 February 1885, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.
