Members Of The 15th Seanad
This is a list of the members of the 15th Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (legislature) of Ireland. These Senators were elected or appointed in 1981, after the 1981 general election and served until the close of poll for the 16th Seanad in 1982. Composition of the 15th Seanad There are a total of 60 seats in the Seanad. 43 Senators are elected by the Vocational panels, 6 elected by the Universities and 11 are nominated by the Taoiseach. Seanad Éireann
Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house). It is commonly called the Seanad or Senate and its members senators (''seanadóirí'' in Irish, singular: ''seanadóir''). Unlike Dáil Éireann, it is not directly elected but consists of a mixture of members chosen by various methods. Its powers are much weaker than those of the Dáil and it can only delay laws with which it disagrees, rather than veto them outright. It can introduce new legislation. It has been located, since its establishment, in Leinster House. Labour Party (Ireland)
The Labour Party ( ga, Páirtí an Lucht Oibre, literally "Party of the Working People") is a centre-left and social-democratic political party in the Republic of Ireland. Founded on 28 May 1912 in Clonmel, County Tipperary, by James Connolly, James Larkin, and William O'Brien (trade unionist), William O'Brien as the political wing of the Irish Trades Union Congress, it describes itself as a "democratic socialist party" in its constitution. Alexis FitzGerald Jnr
Alexis J. G. FitzGerald (7 May 1945 – 15 July 2015) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a TD and Senator in the 1980s. FitzGerald stood unsuccessfully for Dáil Éireann at the 1973 general election in Dublin Central, at the 1977 general election in Dublin South-Central, and at the 1981 general election in Dublin South. FitzGerald then contested the 1981 Seanad election on the Industrial and Commercial Panel, and was returned to the 15th Seanad replacing his uncle Alexis FitzGerald Snr. In the same year he was elected Lord Mayor of Dublin. Joe Walsh (Irish Politician)
Joseph Walsh (1 May 1943 – 9 November 2014) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as Minister for Agriculture and Food from 1992 to 1994 and 1997 to 2004. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Cork South-West constituency from 1977 to 1981 and 1982 to 2007. He was a Senator elected by the Cultural and Educational Panel from 1981 to 1982. Maurice Manning
Maurice Manning (born 14 June 1943) is an Irish academic and former Fine Gael politician. Manning was a member of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) for 21 years, serving in both the Dáil Éireann, Dáil and the Seanad Éireann, Seanad. Since August 2002 he has been President of the Irish Human Rights Commission. On 12 March 2009 he was elected Chancellor of the National University of Ireland, while remaining President of the Human Rights Commission. Liam Naughten
Liam Anthony Naughten (30 May 1944 – 16 November 1996) was an Irish Fine Gael politician. Naughten served as Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann from 1995 to 1996. He was a Senator for the Agricultural Panel from 1977 to 1982 and 1989 to 1996. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Roscommon constituency from 1982 to 1989. Jimmy Leonard
James Leonard (5 June 1927 – 13 April 2022) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. Leonard was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Monaghan constituency at the 1973 general election. He was re-elected for the Cavan–Monaghan constituency at the 1977 general election. He lost his seat at the 1981 general election but was elected to Seanad Éireann by the Administrative Panel. He regained his Dáil seat at the February 1982 general election and retained it until retiring at the 1997 general election. After his retirement, his daughter Ann Leonard unsuccessfully stood for his seat as a Fianna Fáil candidate at the 1997 general election. She was then nominated by the Taoiseach to the Seanad. Charles McDonald (Irish Politician)
Charles McDonald (born 11 June 1935) is a former Irish Fine Gael politician. He was a Senator from 1961 to 1973 and from 1977 to 1992, a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1973 to 1977, and a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1973 to 1979. Biography From County Laois, he was a farmer before entering politics, he was elected in 1961 to the 10th Seanad on the Agricultural Panel, and held his Seanad seat until the 1973 general election, when he was elected to the 20th Dáil for the Laois–Offaly constituency (which he had contested unsuccessfully in 1969).
