Alfred Billson (Australian Politician)
Alfred Arthur Billson (11 January 1858 – 31 October 1930) was an Australian politician. He was born at Wooragee to brewer George Billson and Isabella Blades. He attended Beechworth Grammar School and Scotch College before succeeding his father as a brewer. On 28 June 1881 he married Laura Annie Fielder, with whom he had five children. The family brewery, Billson's Brewery, became the Anglo-Australian Brewery in 1892 (incorporated in 1902), which was amalgamated with brother George Henry Billson's Albury Brewing and Malting Company, to become the Border United Co-operative Breweries, Ltd in 1911. This sold out to a newly formed company, Murray Breweries, 1914. Billson served on Beechworth Shire Council from 1884 to 1893 and from 1895 to 1910, with three terms as president (1888–89, 1899–1901, 1908–09). Electoral District Of Benalla
Benalla was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. The electorate covered a rural area of 17,120 km², and included the towns of Benalla, Bright, Eildon, Euroa, Mansfield, Mount Beauty, Murchison, Myrtleford, Nagambie and Violet Town. The electorate had a population of 47,675 as of the 2006 census, with 36,987 enrolled electors in the 2010 state election. The seat was created in 1904. Historically a staunchly conservative rural district, it was held by conservative members for most of its history. It was held by various early conservative parties throughout the early 20th century, but became safe for the rural conservative National Party, which held the seat for all but nine years from 1920 to 2000. John Carlisle (Australian Politician)
John Joseph Carlisle (c. 1863 – 18 June 1929) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mansfield to farmer William Carlisle and Anna Crockett. Following his father's death in 1871 the family moved to Yarrawonga, and Carlisle grew up to become a farmer in the area. He served on Yarrawonga Shire Council from 1895 to 1907 and was president from 1900 to 1901. In 1903 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Benalla and Yarrawonga, transferring to Benalla at the election the following year. A Liberal who joined the Economy faction of the Nationalist Party in 1917, he was a minister without portfolio from November 1917 to March 1918. In 1920 he joined the Victorian Farmers' Union, which became the Country Party. In 1926 he left the party after a dispute over a proposed redistribution, and stood at the 1927 election as an independent but was defeated. Hugh John Munro Campbell (c. 1854 – 20 October 1921) was an Australian politician. He was born in Melbourne to merchant William Munro Campbell and Christina Matheson. He grew up in Portland from the age of eight, and was an apprentice grocer before entering the family business. On 21 January 1880 he married Harriett Jarrett, with whom he had three children; he would later remarry on 9 June 1920, to Ethel May Waddell. Electoral District Of Gippsland East
The electoral district of Gippsland East is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers most of eastern Victoria and includes the towns of Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost, Omeo, Maffra and Heyfield. Gippsland East is the state's third largest electorate in area and covers 27,544 square kilometres. The National Party held the seat without interruption from 1920 to 1999. However at the 1999 election independent candidate Craig Ingram unexpectedly won the seat after receiving preferences from the independent, One Nation and Labor candidates. Ingram's victory affected state politics—Ingram and fellow Independents Susan Davies and Russell Savage contributed to the end of the Kennett era by agreeing to back Labor to form government after the 1999 election. James Cameron (Victorian Politician)
James Cameron (1846 – 13 July 1922) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Logie-Almond in Perthshire to farmer Alexander Cameron and Anne Pullar. The family moved to Victoria in 1854, settling first at Batesford and then at Beremboke. Cameron became a farmer at Orbost, and also developed business interests in mines at Nowa Nowa and in farm machinery. On 30 April 1879 he married Sarah Scouller, with whom he had seven children. He served on Tambo Shire Council from 1888 to 1892 (president 1885–86, 1890–91) and on Orbost Shire Council from 1892 to 1902 (president 1892–93). In 1902 he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Gippsland East. He moved the no-confidence motion against the Bent government in 1908, and was a minister without portfolio from 1909 to 1913. The electoral district of Evelyn is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly covering the urban fringe north east of Melbourne. It was first proclaimed in 1859. The seat has shrunk considerably in size as the eastern suburbs of Melbourne grew. It now includes the suburbs and towns of Coldstream, Gruyere, Lilydale, and Wonga Park. John Bowser
Sir John Bowser (2 September 1856 – 10 June 1936), Australian politician, was the 26th Premier of Victoria. He was born in London, the son of an army officer, and arrived in Melbourne as a child with his family. He grew up at Bacchus Marsh and when he left school got a job with the ''Bacchus Marsh Express''. As a young man he went to Scotland and worked on newspapers while studying at University of Edinburgh. Returning to Australia, he settled in Wangaratta, where he farmed and managed the ''Wangaratta Chronicle'', which he eventually bought. In October 1894 Bowser was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Wangaratta and Rutherglen. Wangaratta and Rutherglen was renamed to Electoral district of Wangaratta in 1906; it was renamed again to Electoral district of Wangaratta and Ovens in 1927; Bowser held the seat until November 1929.
