Members Of The Tasmanian House Of Assembly, 1903–1906
This is a list of members of the Tasmanian House of Assembly between the 2 April 1903 election and the 29 March 1906 election. The Hare-Clark system being trialled in Hobart and Launceston came to an end at the 1903 election, and several seats in the rural region between the two centres either merged or changed substantially. Possibly the most significant result was the failure of the Premier of Tasmania, Elliott Lewis, to win a seat—formerly the member for abolished Richmond, he ran for the new Central Hobart seat, and was beaten by Herbert Nicholls, an opposition backbencher with only two years' parliamentary experience, by a substantial margin. The election also saw an increased participation by the fledgling Labor Party, which won four of the six seats it contested, all of which were in mining areas of the state. Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. By having multiple members for each division, the voting intentions of the electors are more closely represented in the House of Assembly. Since 1998, the quota for election in each division, after distribution of preferences, has been 16.7% (one-sixth). Julian Brown (politician)
Julian George Brown (24 February 1850 - 2 October 1925) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1903 to 1906, representing the electorate of New Norfolk. Brown was born in Hobart, later moving to New Norfolk to work for businessman Thomas Allwright. He then established his own successful general store and orchard there, operating it until his retirement. He was a member of the New Norfolk Municipal Council, a justice of the peace, chairman and treasurer of the road trust, and a trustee of the Methodist Church. He was also a co-founder of the New Norfolk Masonic and Oddfellows' Lodges, and was involved in the foundation of the Tasmanian Fruitgrowers' Association. He was elected to the House of Assembly at the 1903 election, having been endorsed in his campaign by the Reform League. George Brettingham-Moore
George Edward Brettingham-Moore (11 February 1846 - 12 August 1919) was an Australian state and local politician. He was a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1903 to 1909, representing the electorate of West Hobart. He was elected an alderman of the Hobart City Council for the period 1902 to 1904. Brettingham-Moore was born George Edward Moore on 11 February, 1846 in Lincoln, Lincolshire, England. He was at Rossall School, near Fleetwood, Lancashire where he was included in the 1861 England census with a brother Joseph. As a trainee civil engineer, he served a pupilage of 5 years (August, 1863-68), under Messrs T.E. Harrison and Robt. Hodgson, MM. Inst. C.E., in the office and on new station works and the line through the town of Leeds. In 1868, he went to India to work for the Great Western Peninsular Railway Company. Stafford Bird
Bolton Stafford Bird CMG (30 January 1840 – 15 December 1924) was an English-born Australian Congregationalist clergyman, farmer and politician. Bird was born in Hazlerigg, Northumberland, the son of the local schoolmaster. In 1852 the family emigrated to Australia and began farming at Clunes, Victoria. In 1865 Bird was ordained in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, but in 1867 transferred to the Congregational Church as minister of the church at Ballarat. In 1870 he took charge of several churches in the Avoca district. In 1874 he took over the church in Davey Street, Hobart, Tasmania, but resigned in 1877 due to ill-health and bought a farm near Geeveston in the Huon district. He grew apples, which he began to ship to England, thus becoming a pioneer of the Tasmanian apple export industry. In August 1891, however, the Bank of Van Diemen's Land, with whom Bird held a mortgage, collapsed and he lost the farm, moving to a much smaller property at Lunawanna on Bruny Island. ... Jonathan Best
Jonathan Best (19 August 1840 – 13 May 1913) was an Australian politician. He was born in Launceston, Van Diemen's Land. In 1894 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as the member for Deloraine. He was defeated in 1897 but served again from 1899 to 1909, when proportional representation was introduced. He was elected as one of the members for Wilmot and served until his defeat in 1912; he was re-elected in 1913 but died in office at Launceston later that year.
