Melvin Rosen
Melvin "Mel" Rosen (March 24, 1928 – March 25, 2018) was an American track coach. He was head coach of the Auburn University Tigers track team for 28 years, from 1963 to 1991, during which time the team won four consecutive Southeastern Conference (SEC) Indoor Track & Field Championships, from 1977 to 1980, and an outdoor track and field championship in 1979. Early life Rosen was Jewish, was born in The Bronx, New York, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from the University of Iowa, where he was a middle distance runner, in 1950. Coaching career Rosen then coached at University of Iowa as an assistant for three years, while earning a master's degree and beginning work on a doctorate which he then continued to study for at Auburn. In addition, he served two years in the Army at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was track coach for the post. All-America
The All-America designation is an annual honor bestowed upon an amateur sports person from the United States who is considered to be one of the best amateurs in their sport. Individuals receiving this distinction are typically added to an All-America team for their sport. Some sports will have multiple All-America teams and will list the honorees as members of a first team, second team, or third team. As such, All-America teams are composed of outstanding US amateur players. Individuals falling short of qualifying for the honor may receive All-America honorable mention. The designation is typically used at the collegiate level although, beginning in 1957, high school- athletes in football began being honored with All-America status, which then carried-over to other sports like basketball and cross-country running. Hutsell-Rosen Track
Hutsell-Rosen Track (originally named Wilbur Hutsell Track) is an outdoor track and field facility located in Auburn, Alabama on the campus of Auburn University. It is the official outdoor track and field facility for the Auburn Tigers track and field teams. Along with John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, Icahn Stadium in New York City and Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas, Hutsell-Rosen is one of only five International Association of Athletics Federations Class 1-certified track and field complexes in the United States. History After being constructed in 1970, the facility was originally named Wilbur Hutsell Track, in honor of Wilbur Hutsell, the first track coach at Auburn. After major renovations in 2006, the facility was officially renamed on April 22, 2008 to honor both Hutsell and Mel Rosen, Auburn's second track and field coach, who coached the team for 28 years.
