Melvin A. Brannon
Melvin Amos Brannon (1865 – March 26, 1950) was a biological scientist, university dean and (briefly) coach at University of North Dakota for athletics and American football. Early life and education Brannon was born in 1865 near Lowell, Indiana. He attended Wabash College, in Crawfordsville, Indiana and gained a B.A. degree in 1889 followed by an M.A. in 1890. In 1911-12, while working in a senior position at the University of North Dakota, Brannon completed a thesis for a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and was awarded the degree summa cum laude for only the second time in Botany. The title of his thesis was ''The Salton Sea: The Action of Salton Sea Water on Vegetable Tissues'' and it was published in 1914. Academic career Brannon initially taught at a high school biology in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He worked at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole in Massachusetts in the summer. Lowell is a town in West Creek and Cedar Creek townships, Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,276 at the 2010 census. History Lowell was platted in 1853. It was named after Lowell, Massachusetts. The James Brannon House, Melvin A. Halsted House, Lowell Commercial Historic District, Charles E. Nichols House, and J. Claude Rumsey House are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Geography Lowell is located at (41.2924, −87.4151). According to the 2010 census, Lowell has a total area of , of which (or 98.29%) is land and (or 1.71%) is water. Located five miles (8 km) outside of the Great Lakes Basin, Lowell sought permission to pipe in lake water to replace city water drawn from its high fluoride deep wells.
