Melton Field

	Melton Field Melton Field was built on the campus of the University of South Carolina in 1926 and named in honor of the university's former president, William Davis Melton. It served as the primary home of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks football team from 1926 until Columbia Municipal Stadium was built in 1934. The Gamecocks generally played home games at Melton Field except for their annual game against Clemson, which was played at a 15,000 seat wooden stadium at Columbia's fairgrounds. The site is currently occupied by the Russell House University Union and the Callcott Social Sciences Center on the University of South Carolina's main campus. The Gamecocks compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference. The team's head coach is Shane Beamer. They play their home games at Williams–Brice Stadium. From 1953 through 1970, the Gamecocks played in the Atlantic Coast Conference, winning the 1969 ACC championship and finishing No. 15 in the 1958 final AP poll. From 1971 through 1991, they competed as a major independent, producing 1980 Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers, six bowl appearances, and Final Top-25 rankings in 1984 and 1987 (AP No. 11 and No. 15). 	South Carolina State Fair The South Carolina State Fair is an annual 12-day state fair held in Columbia, South Carolina and operated by the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina. North American Midway Entertainment caters rides, food, and games for the fair. The fair is South Carolina's largest recurring event, attracting over 400,000 fairgoers annually. History As early as the 1720s, agricultural fairs held in the South Carolina lowcountry were the forerunners of today's South Carolina State Fair.
