Alexander Melrose (16 May 1865 – 2 September 1944) was a South Australian lawyer noted for his patronage of the arts. History Alexander was a son of pastoralist George Melrose (1806–1894) and his wife Euphemia née Thomson (c. 1829–1887), who arrived in South Australia from Scotland in the ''Palmyra'' in 1839, who founded the "Rosebank" property in Mount Pleasant, South Australia, Mount Pleasant. Alex was born in Australia and educated at Prince Alfred College, and studied law at the University of Adelaide. Alexander Melrose
Alexander John Melrose (18 March 1889 – 6 September 1962) was a politician in the State of South Australia. History Melrose was born at Kooringa, the only son of the noted philanthropist Sir John Melrose (1860–1938), of Ulooloo, and his wife Emily Eliza Melrose, née Edhouse (1862–1923). Alex's grandfather, George Melrose (1806–1894), was a Scottish pioneer settler of South Australia. Jimmy Melrose, the famous aviator, was a cousin. Melrose was educated at St. Peter's College, and was early involved in running the station, as his father lost his sight around 1901. He lived at Kadlunga station, Mintaro, where he bred Merino sheep, Jersey cattle, and Percheron horses. Barry Melrose
Barry James Melrose (born July 15, 1956) is a Canadian–American broadcaster and former professional ice hockey player and head coach. Melrose played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) and National Hockey League (NHL). After retiring from playing, he became a head coach and is best known for being the coach of the Los Angeles Kings in their run to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final. He is a long-time commentator and hockey analyst for ESPN and contributor for the NHL Network. Hockey career Playing career Melrose began his hockey career as a defenceman in the WCHL with the Kamloops Chiefs in 1974, where he stayed for two years. Charles James Melrose (13 September 1913 – 5 July 1936) was an Australian aviator who held a number of flying records, and was the youngest and only solo flier to finish the Melbourne (MacRobertson) Centenary Air Race in 1934. History Jimmy was a son of James Melrose of Wangaraleednie Station, Franklin Harbor, near Cowell, South Australia, a member of the wealthy pastoral family headed by George Melrose (1806–1894) of "Rosebank", Mount Pleasant. Joseph Melrose
Joseph H. Melrose Jr. (December 26, 1944 – November 8, 2014) was an American diplomat who served as United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone during the final years of the Sierra Leone Civil War. He helped broker the Lomé Peace Accord which brought an end to hostilities, and he worked to expose the role of blood diamonds in financing armed conflict in Africa. Career Melrose joined the Foreign Service in 1969 and began with overseas assignments to Vietnam and Syria. He served as Consul General in Karachi, Pakistan when President Zia and U.S. Ambassador Arnold Raphel died in a plane crash, and he was Deputy Chief of Mission in Lagos, Nigeria, from 1995 to 1998. Richard Burt Melrose is an Australian mathematician and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who works on geometric analysis, partial differential equations, and differential geometry. Education Melrose received in 1974 his Ph.D. from Cambridge University under F. Gerard Friedlander with thesis ''Initial and Initial-Boundary Value Problems''. Career Melrose became a research fellow at St John's College, Cambridge. In 1977 he was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study.
