Melissa Gorman
Melissa Anne Gorman (born 11 December 1985) is an Australian long-distance swimmer who specialises in long-distance freestyle and open-water events. Career At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Gorman won a silver medal in the 800 m freestyle. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Gorman finished 15th in the Women's 10 km open water marathon and 17th in the 800 m freestyle. At the 2009 World Aquatics Championships, Gorman stunned Olympic champion Larisa Ilchenko to win gold in the women's 5 km. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Gorman won a bronze medal in the 800 m freestyle. At the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, Gorman won a gold medal in the women's 1500 m freestyle and set a new Commonwealth record. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Gorman finished 10th in the women's 10 km open water marathon. Larisa Dmitriyevna Ilchenko (russian: Лариса Дмитриевна Ильченко; born 18 November 1988) is a Russian long-distance swimmer. She has won eight world titles and a gold at the 2008 Olympics. Biography Ilchenko has dominated long distance swimming since her first World Championships in Dubai, 2004 where, aged just 16 won by over 30 seconds . The following year in Montreal, she had a much tougher time as the veterans pushed her under and held her up, but still won with a final sprint. This has been the pattern of all her subsequent victories, battling her way through the pack before sprinting clear at the end. She doubled up in Napoli 2006 to become both the 5 km and 10 km open water world champion. She has won both 5 km and 10 km events at all subsequent World Championships. 2009 World Aquatics Championships
The 2009 World Aquatics Championships ( it, Campionati mondiali di nuoto 2009) or the XIII FINA World Championships were held in Rome, Italy from 18 July to 2 August 2009. The 2009 Championships featured competition in all 5 aquatics disciplines: diving, swimming, open water swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo.
