Melezzo Occidentale
The Melezzo OccidentaleThe Western Melezzo, so called to distinguish it from the Melezzo Orientale which traverses the eastern part of the Val Vigezzo and joins with the Maggia near Losone in Switzerland. is a 13 km Alpine torrent which runs through the western part of the Val Vigezzo, a side valley of the Ossola in the Province of Verbano Cusio Ossola, northern Italy. Belonging to the Po basin, it is a left tributary of the Toce which in its turn flows into Lago Maggiore. The river is formed by the confluence of various streams to the west of Druogno (which marks the watershed between the western and eastern sections of the Val Vigezzo), and runs westward through the narrow valley which connects the high plain of the central Val Vigezza to the Val d’Ossola. After a course of 13 km, which takes it through the commune of Masera and entails a descent of about 2000 m, it joins the Toce near Domodossola. Toce
The Toce () is a river in Piedmont, Italy, which stretches the length of the Val d'Ossola from the Swiss border to Lake Maggiore into which it debouches near Fondotoce in the commune of Verbania. The river is long and is formed in the upper Val Formazza by the confluence of a number of torrents in the plain of Riale. Geography The source of one of these, the Gries, is situated on the Italian southern side of the Gries Pass; another forms beneath the Passo di San Giacomo, others flow from little Alpine lakes such as Lago Castel and Lago di Sabbione. South of La Frua the water of the river plummets over the Cascata del Toce into the Formazza Valley, through which it flows before transversing Valle Antigorio after another series of cascades. The Ossola (, also Valle Ossola or Val d’Ossola) is an area of Italy situated to the north of Lago Maggiore. It lies within the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Its principal river is the Toce, and its most important town Domodossola. Etymology There are many etymological claims as to the origins of the name Ossola. Lago Maggiore
