Meldal Church
Meldal Church ( no, Meldal kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Orkland municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located in the village of Meldal. It is the church for the Meldal parish which is part of the Orkdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros. The red, concrete and wood church was built in a long church style in 1988 by the architect John Mosand. The church seats about 375 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1310, but the church was not new that year. The first church in Meldal was likely built in the 13th century and it may have been an important county church since it had been built on the Grøtte farm in Meldal which was a crown estate. The building may have been a stave church. Historically, the church was known as the Grøtte Church. The church was torn down in 1650 and replaced with a new church on the same site. This list of churches in Nidaros is a list of the Church of Norway churches in the Diocese of Nidaros which covers all of Trøndelag county in Norway. The list is divided into several sections, one for each deanery in the diocese. Administratively within each deanery, the churches are divided by municipalities which have their own church council and then into parishes which have their own councils . Each parish may have one or more congregations in it. The municipality of Trondheim includes several deaneries within the municipality due to its large population. Historically, the diocese has had many deaneries, but the number of deaneries has been reduced in recent years. John Tverdahl
John Egil Tverdahl (1890 in Trondheim – 1969) was a Norwegian architect. Tverdahl designed many churches as well as led the restoration of several churches that were located in Nordmøre, Trøndelag, and Nordland in northern Norway. Tverdahl was educated at Trondheim Technical College in 1913. Worked with architect Johan Osness from 1913 to 1916 and with architect Einar Oscar Schou from 1916 to 1917. Starting in 1917 he worked as architect Olaf Nordhagen's assistant while working on the Nidaros Cathedral's restoration work. He specifically worked on the detailed drawings for the large rose window on the western front of the cathedral. He also undertook valuable work in arranging and systematizing the sculpture and stone collection, with archive cards, drawings, and photos of each fragment. Eidsvoll (; sometimes written as ''Eidsvold'') is a municipality in Akershus in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the Romerike traditional region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Sundet. General information Etymology The first element is the genitive case of the word ''eid'' (Old Norse: ''eið'') and the last element is ''voll'' (Old Norse: ''vǫllr'') which means "meadow" or "field". The Norwegian Constituent Assembly (in Norwegian ''Grunnlovsforsamlingen'', also known as ''Riksforsamlingen'') is the name given to the 1814 constitutional assembly at Eidsvoll in Norway, that adopted the Norwegian Constitution and formalised the dissolution of the union with Denmark. An election church ( no, valgkirke) is a term used for approximately 300 churches in Norway that were used as polling stations during the elections to the Norwegian Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll in 1814. This was Norway's first national elections and this assembly is the group that wrote the Constitution of Norway. The churches were used because they were the natural center of public life for most places in the country, and because the parish ( no, prestegjeld) was the basic unit of the electoral system. The parish priest was the chief official in the local community, and it was usually the parish priest that administered the elections.
