Melbourne Stars are an Australian Twenty20 franchise cricket team, based in Melbourne, Victoria that competes in Australia's Twenty20 competition, the Big Bash League. The Stars wear a green uniform and play their home matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Big Bash League
The Big Bash League (known as the KFC Big Bash League for sponsorship reasons, often abbreviated to BBL or Big Bash) is an Australian professional club Twenty20 cricket league, which was established in 2011 by Cricket Australia. The Big Bash League replaced the previous competition, the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, and features eight city-based franchises instead of the six state teams which had participated previously. The competition has been sponsored by fast food-chicken outlet KFC since its inception. It is one of the two T20 cricket leagues, alongside the Indian Premier League, to feature amongst the List of sports attendance figures#Top 10 leagues in average attendance, top ten domestic sport leagues in average attendance. 2013–14 Big Bash League Season
The 2013–14 Big Bash League season or BBL, 03 was the third season of the Big Bash League, the premier Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. The tournament began on 20 December 2013 and ended on 7 February 2014. The format remained the same as the previous season but ran for a time-frame that is two weeks longer. The schedule also overlapped with the 2013–14 Ashes series. It was the first season to be broadcast on free-to-air television on Network Ten. The tournament was won by Perth Scorchers and the final was hosted at the WACA Ground in Perth, Australia. The Scorchers beat the Hobart Hurricanes in the final by 39 runs. Ben Dunk from the Hurricanes was named the 'Man of the Tournament' while Jonathan Wells from the same team was named the 'Young Gun of the Tournament'. 2019–20 Big Bash League Season
The 2019–20 Big Bash League season or BBL, 09 was the ninth season of the Big Bash League, the professional men's Twenty20 domestic cricket competition in Australia. The tournament started on 17 December 2019 and concluded on 8 February 2020. The length of the season was shortened compared to that from the last year, while the number of matches was increased from 59 to 61 from the previous season. The knock-outs were revamped into a play-off system, with the top two teams in the league getting a second chance to make it to the final even if they lost the first match in the play-offs. The play-off matches were given unique monikers, namely ''The Eliminator'', ''The Qualifier'', ''The Knock-Out'', ''The Challenger'' followed by ''The Final''. The Melbourne Renegades were the defending champions, but finished last in the round-robin group stage. In the final, the Sydney Sixers beat the Melbourne Stars by 19 runs to win the tournament. 2018–19 Big Bash League Season
The 2018–19 Big Bash League season or BBL, 08 was the eighth season of the KFC Big Bash League, the professional men's Twenty20 domestic cricket competition in Australia. The tournament started on 19 December 2018. Adelaide Strikers were the defending champions. The competition was extended to a full home and away season for the first time, with each team to play each other twice at both a home venue and away venue. This consists of 56 regular season matches, two semi-final fixtures and the final. For this season of the tournament, the toss (cricket), toss was replaced by a bat flip, with "roofs and flats" used instead of heads or tails. The season saw Cameron Bancroft's return to professional cricket, following his involvement in the 2018 Australian ball-tampering scandal, ball-tampering scandal in March 2018. 2015–16 Big Bash League Season
The 2015–16 Big Bash League season (BBL, 05) was the fifth season of the Big Bash League (BBL), the premier Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. The tournament ran from 17 December 2015 to 24 January 2016. The BBL title was won by the Sydney Thunder, who defeated the Melbourne Stars by three wickets in the final to claim their first title. The Perth Scorchers, who had been seeking a third successive title, lost to the Stars in the semi-final thus making this the only season to date that the Scorchers failed to make the final. Chris Lynn of the Brisbane Heat was the tournament's leading run-scorer, making 378 runs from eight matches, and was named player of the tournament. The leading wicket-taker was Clint McKay of the Thunder, who took 18 wickets from ten matches. Net Run Rate
Net run rate (NRR) is a statistical method used in analysing teamwork and/or performance in cricket. It is the most commonly used method of ranking teams with equal points in limited overs league competitions, similar to goal difference in football. The NRR in a single game is the average runs per over that team scores, minus the average runs per over that is scored against them. The NRR in a tournament is the average runs per over that a team scores across the whole tournament, minus the average runs per over that is scored against them across the whole tournament. This is the same as the weighted average of the run rates scored in each match (weighted by the lengths of the innings batted compared to the other innings batted), minus the weighted average of the run rates conceded in each match (weighted by the lengths of the innings bowled compared to the other innings bowled). Twenty20
Twenty20 (T20) is a shortened game format of cricket. At the professional level, it was introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003 for the inter-county competition. In a Twenty20 game, the two teams have a single innings each, which is restricted to a maximum of 20 overs. Together with first-class and List A cricket, Twenty20 is one of the three current forms of cricket recognised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as being at the highest international or domestic level. A typical Twenty20 game is completed in about two and a half hours, with each innings lasting around 70 minutes and an official 10-minute break between the innings.
