Eyob Mekonnen
Eyob Mekonnen Yalem ( am, እዮብ መኮንን ያለም; 12 October 1975 – 18 August 2013) was an Ethiopian reggae singer widely considered as progenitor of reggae music in Ethiopia. His songs were well known for their themes of "love, understanding, and respect". Early life Eyob was born in Jijiga in 1975, during the start of the Ethiopian Civil War. His father, Mekonnen Yalem, was an officer in the Ethiopian Army during the Ogaden War, which was credited with inspiring him to impart peaceful messages in songs such as "Nekchalehu" and "Negen Layew". He moved to Addis Ababa, when he was young, and attended school whilst maintaining an interest in music. Deresse Mekonnen Tsigu (Amharic: ደረሠ መኮንነን; born 20 October 1987) is an Ethiopian middle distance runner, who specializes in the 1500 metres. He is a two-time World Indoor champion and was the silver medallist at the 2009 World Championships. He represented Ethiopia in the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and holds the Ethiopian record for the mile run. Running career Born in Sheno, Oromia Region, his first major international competition was the 2007 World Championships in Osaka where he finished 11th in the heats. His first major win came at the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia at the 1500 m, where he was initially disqualified for a lane violation after winning the race. Hailu Mekonnen (born April 4, 1980 in Arsi) is an Ethiopian runner, who specializes in the 5000 metres and cross-country running. His first medals came in 1998, when he took bronze and team gold at the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and won a silver in the 5000 m at the 1998 African Championships in Athletics. With Haile Gebrselassie as his training partner, he continued to improve, winning the junior race and taking bronze in the senior short course for a medalling double at the 1999 World Cross Country Championships. He also won the 1500 metres gold medal at the All-Africa Games that year. Demeke Mekonnen Hassen ( amh, ደመቀ መኮንን ሀሰን; born 27 September 1963) is an Ethiopian politician, serving as the deputy prime minister of Ethiopia, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and vice-president of the Prosperity Party. He previously served as chairman of the Amhara Democratic Party (ADP) and deputy chair of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) until the dissolution of the two in December 2019. Abebe Mekonnen (born 16 October 1964) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. Mekkonen was the winner of the 93rd Boston Marathon in 1989. He also competed for Ethiopia in the 1992 Olympics and 1996 Olympics in the marathon. He did not finish in the 1992 games and finished 81st with a time of 2:29:45 in the 1996 Summer Olympics. Mekonnen has the most sub 2:15 marathons of anyone: 32 in all. When he ran his 28th sub-2:15 marathon he broke the record set by Bill Rodgers. Wallelign Mekonnen Kassa (March 22, 1945 – December 10, 1972) was a Marxist student activist and militant active in the Ethiopian Student Movement from the mid-1960s to his death in 1972. Wallelign was the author of the highly influential but contentious article "On the Question of Nationalities in Ethiopia" published in 1969. Early life Wallelign was born in Amhara debresina/borena, in South Wollo, part of Amhara National Regional State. He graduated from Woizero Sehin Secondary School in Dessie. Student leader Wallelign enrolled at the then Haile Selassie I University as a Political Science student. Seifu Makonnen (11 June 1952 – 15 June 2020), known by the nickname Tibo, was a two-time Olympic boxer from Ethiopia. Biography He was born in Aleltu, in the province of Showa. By the age of 12, he already showed athletic prowess as a bodybuilder. In 1971, inspired by Muhammad Ali, he became a boxer. An American coach, Edward Simon, recognized Makonnen's ability and welcomed Makonnen into his classes. Makonnen then fought exhibition bouts in front of as many as 50,000 people at His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie Stadium.
